Completed Valmet Hunter 308 conversion to M76 and Galil

M62/71 are quite different.

If you had the M62 hand guard, the M62 would be possible as the front and rear sight position are the same as the M76. Visually it would look the same, Hunter/M62, but structurally no. The 62/71 are stamped and use a trunnion set up.

To make further complications, the M71 has the sight post at the end of the barrel and rear sight on the gas tube. In this respect the M78 stamped receiver would be closer to the M71.

Your right about the M71 looking more like a M78. I think of them very much as a light barreled .223 M78 with a different stock. There are minor differences other than that but nothing that would keep it from being built up on a Hunter receiver in the same way the M76 parts are. Barrel threads are the same for stamped and milled receivers. I think a M71 would make a great Hunter build. (Full disclosure, I have a M71 parts set in the EE)
Can anyone think of a reason this can't be done like the M76 clones are?
