Those who know me well know I could not conceive of the idea to give up a chance for a good goose hunt to spend my morning in a treestand in hopes of bagging a deer. Well that said, thats exactly what I did this morning and bagged my first deer, a nice 6 point buck. To make a long story as short as possible here it is.....

Bagged my first buck today. Thanks to the generosity of Big J and Trudy I was able to put the slam on a nice buck from one of Jims infamous tree stands on their property. I put down a 6 point buck with one shot from 300+ yards with the rifle( Win Model 71, .348 cal) my
Grandfather passed on to me when he decided he could no longer hunt the mountains at home in B.C. The deer ran about 25-30 yards before collapsing. I climbed down from the stand after calling Jim to let him know I had one down and proceeded to go drag out my deer. When I got to where he should have been he was gone and I could see a buck walking away heads down about 60 yards away? Was that him? Or did he drop in the 5 ft long grass? I continued to walk around searching to no avail. The deer I saw walking away had vanished. I called Trudy to bring the dogs to track with and she came in no time at all and started searching with us. I was beginning to get a sinking feeling in my heart and stomach at the thought of losing such a nice animal and was really beginning to question myself as to my shot placement. I had heard the bullet impact echo back at me after the shot, saw the deer jump and buckle then run tail and head down and finally crash. I watched for 20 seconds or so through the scope and he only moved once, lifted his head for a second then settled down, I was sure I had killed him. About 20 mins after her arrival Trudy found the deer and let out a call to us that she had found it, without the dogs I might add. Good Indian blood in that woman, what a tracker! Hang onto that one Jim! It was after all the deer I had seen walking away, he must have vanished from my view when he collapsed not 30 yards from where I had last seen him. Jim let me gut it with his good instruction to guide me and we loaded it into the Kubota and headed back to the "Lodge" LOL. Took a few pics, relaxed and had a great breakfast thanks once again to Trudy and then finished the job of skinning and hanging the deer to age for butchering. Thank you so much Trudy and J. Could not have had better company or friends with whom to bag my first one! Thanks J and Trudy once again. I will never forget this day.:TT:

A video shot from my gun-cam, I mounted it atop the scope to see how it would work out. Would be good at 100 yards or less but with no zoom, well you get the idea at least how far the deer was, there are also some pics on the video. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Nothing like putting the smack down on a great animal with a family heirloom...and what a classic it is! I would just about cut off my left nut for a 71 in 348!

Congratulations!
