Condition of carry when still hunting with a semi rifle.

Was giving the rifles a clean today and was thinking about this with spring bear in mind.

In the past with bolts or lever can cycle fairly quite and would normally travel with no round in the chamber until needed.

Was trying out the semi today with dummy rounds and it can be loaded quietly but that last push to get it into battery gives quite the noise, not as much as letting the bolt fly but more than the bolt or lever.

Just wondering what other people do, I guess I haven’t had one in the chamber as I find when still hunting crawling over rocks and logs it’s a safety consideration but thinking I may need to change my thoughts around this.
 
If I'm hunting the rifle is loaded. Condition One, as Cooper would say. Cocked and locked. If there is a situation where it should be unloaded, then I unload. But for the rest of the time it's loaded. If not, you're not hunting, you're walking around wit a rifle. Big difference.
 
This is my major issue hunting with semis. There are some hunting situations where IMO it is acceptable to have a round in the chamber, and many situations where it is not. Some semis allow you to slowly/quietly close the bolt, some need you to let her ride and slam shut. It is something to consider when buying a semi for hunting.
 
I'm with BUM here
The rifle is loaded and round chambered
I only empty the chamber when passing difficult terrain (streams, huge logs, etc).

Agreed, but IIRC the last time this was debated there was a distinct East West divide. Folks out East agree with BUM and folks out West seem to leave the chamber empty mag loaded...

Another thing to keep in mind... When things go bad, they go bad fast... For me, that means having one in the chamber.

Mines always ready to roar as well when I'm hunting. My Remington 7400 you have to let her slam and it's so damn loud anything within 1/4 mile would hear you. I know another guy with same rifle trying to be quiet one morning with his and ended up having a buck come out and gun went click cause he didn't let it slam.

Same when hunting with my 7400 just like the owner's manual states to let the bolt slam closed to load.

A bear (or any other game animal) would probably hear the action being closed regardless of the action.

A deer will spook when you take the safety off - now there's a real dilemma!

IMHO walking around in the woods with a loaded chamber is not required. If you bear hunt, it most probably will be in a cache anyway. And the chances of an accident raise quite a bit. It's just me, I trust very few people with a loaded rifle around me.

If a bear "jumps you" while you are walking to or from your cache, the sound of the bolt slamming shut might be just what you need to get it to move away.

But I know most disagree with that, they want to get the "playing soldier" out of their system. I have done my share, so that might explain it.
 
Loaded rifles aren't dangerous... unless you point them at something you don't intend to shoot.

If I didn't hunt with a loaded chamber, my freezer would be empty right now.

But like jay says, it's geographical. In eastern Ontario, I have literally never had the opportunity to spot n stalk. You're either still hunting, stand hunting, doing drives, or running dogs. The terrain and thick bush just won't allow anything else. You've got to be r day for a quick shot in these parts.
 
I keep my rifle loaded, safety on, no matter what the action, unless I am walking behind someone, then it's empty chamber.

Don't be obtuse.

You're welcome to hunt however you wish. No need to insult others because they choose a different method. The fellas above have put forward perfectly legitimate reasons for their methods. "Soldier boy" wasn't listed.
 
there defiantly seems to be a consensus on carrying the rifle with one in the chamber,

I was in the australian reserve for 10 yrs and was use to doing this when doing training patrols in the bush, but when still hunting I use a kifaru gun bearer or sling as I spend the majority of the time with the bino's in my hand, still aware of were the muzzle is but not the same feeling as always having the gun in your hand.

When people say they always have one in the chamber is the rifle slung?
