Hey all so Ive been reloading for 4 years not but has been limited somewhat common Calibers and easy to find load data for. Now I have run into a little problem.. I had another custom Rifle Made in a what seems to be VERY odd Cal. (6-222) also knows as the 6x43. Its simply a 222REM necked up to shoot 6mm bullets.

INFO for you all that can help.

CAL. 6-222(6x43)
Rifle: Rem 788 Action
Barrel: Ted Giallard 1-8" twist(6mm)
Trigger:(Timney)

Current Load: 24.5gr H322, CCI 400 Primer, 65Gr Honady V-Max, OLD WW-Super Win Brass. Velocity 3050FPS.

I was using this load for coyotes this winter(WORKS WELL) but accuracy is just around 1" for 5 shots.. Acceptable for hunting but Not so grate for varmint and long range steel banging.

So here is my Question.. I really Like H322 for a powder but cannot get accuracy any better.. I have try'd 70gr Sierra BlitzKings with no luck on bringing accuracy down with different powders i have on hand, as well as seating Depth but am limited to my Mag Length. Now im onto 60gr Berger FB Varmint/Target. Just got back from the Range with Test loads of 23.4-24gr of H322 getting (2850FPS-2980FPS) in New Hornady Frontier brass. Again 1"groups.

What Way would you all go for choosing a differnet powder.. Slower to something like H335 or 4198(2 of which i dont have) RL10X which i do have but running low. I Also have H4895 but find it may be to slow as im already into compressed loads.. Or do i go to something Faster like RL7.. Im trying to get velocity and accuracy.. So based on Bullet weights im running what all would you do??

isnt it usully heavier bullets slower powder, Lighter bullets Faster powder based on the Cartridge..

Thanks all for the help
Josh

Dont quote me, but that looks to be very similar to the 6x45 so I would suggest with everything start low and work up till you find your ceiling.

I like Hodgdons Extreme powders and since you like shooting this load in the summer and winter. They would be perfect for just this very reason. For that bullet range I would look at Varget for your next powder choice. Another good powder that you can look into is XBR 8208. I hear it works great as well but havent used it yet for anything.

Josh..........why would you go to a 1-8 twist with such a low capacity case and light bullets? I do believe this combination may well be where your accuracy dilemma has it's roots. .243 barrels with 1-8 twist are normally used to shoot 107-115 grn bullets @ between 2800-3000 fps. You might try a little heavier and longer bullet if you are seeking sub MOA accuracy.

c-fbmi The reason going with such a fast twist was to Gain RPM and help with stablization of 80gr bullets when i decide to go that route. I do plan on shooting heavies at some point but currently they dont have them in stock at the LGS. I was hoping the fast twist would help with stabilization with the lack of velocity.. Also its the twist rate of choice for the 6x45 which is a 223 case which doesnt offer much more for case capacity/ velocity. thought it would be a good fit since i should be able to get 80's around 25-2700fps.

Your are correct and thats currently what i have been doing is using 6x45 load data and taking 5% off the starting charges and starting from there but the only data i have on hand is an old Sierra book which doesnt have any of the newer powders listed. I have gone to the Hodgdon website to find powder info and its very good. just hoping to maybe here from someone with first hand experiance

Thanks

8208XBR or benchmark might get you close......I had a gaillard barrel once......you've reached it's accuracy potential

I've had several Gaillard barrels and all shot better than 1", I've found the precision of the install at least as important as the barrel.

i dont think its the barrel. i have 3 giallard barrels and all of them are great. Not ruling it out but will be the last thing i look at.. I will try benchmark and see how it gets me for accuracy, and will look more into Varget.

Thanks

Couldn't find 6mm/222 on quickload so I used 6x45 to see what it said.
Quickload suggests that H322 is too slow for the 6x45 with 65gr bullets. H4198 and even H4227 or similar powders look promising.

I wonder when we'll have data for the new CFE BLK in the 6x45?? it shines in the 17 fireball and 7.62x39 as well as the AAC BLK it was designed for

If you have H4895 and H335, I would try these powders before buying a can of 4198. H4895 works well in a large number of cartridges. It and Varget are almost universal powders for small and medium cartridges.

Well i was out today with some reloads to try with 70gr Sierra Blitzkings. H4895 was the powder. worked from 22-24gr in .2gr increments.. best group i got was about 1.5" wiht 2 of the bullets touching which i think is just a fluke... all my brass is pre weighed so i can have each group as close as possible. Best velocity was 2835fps which im guessing means that its a little bit on the slow side?? H322 gets me 3000-3050.. maybe somewhere inbetween like Benchmark would be a good place to try. I was thinking about trying the new D4198... any reports on it??

Thanks
