 Broke my LMT - MRP Locking Bolt!!!

:stirthepot2:

The XCR I hear, has only one retaining bolt.... We could talk for another 10 pages on the pros and cons of 2 vs 1. Hex vs Torx.

I'd rather have an MRP than any other rail system.

Actually it is called an upper.

So... I hate to perform thread necromancy, but this is the only post I could find in search about snapped screws, and with myself being a hamfisted oaf armed with a defective torque wrench.... I snapped my screws.

However, I hopefully shouldn't be restarting the screw war of '08 (already ordered hardware, for the sake of world peace, I will not say who from), my question is this: how do I go about pulling out the broken off threading?! I am contemplating going at them with a good soak of WD-40 and an ez-out, But I wanted to confer with some folks who've been down this road first to make sure I'm not about to further damage my beautiful investment.

Any advice/help appreciated.

Maybe something like this?

I haven't broken the bolts on my LMT, but have used ez-outs before.

Fwiw, this is my advice:
- if you are ham-fisted, and depending how the bolt broke, you may want to consider sending it to LMT or a gun plumber to fix...,
- if you do go with the ez-out, go with a quality set, as there are crappy ones out there that will do more damage than good.

...do you know who makes a good quality set?

I won't profess to know necessarily what you should get, but I have worked with the stuff Princess Auto (pro point) and Canadian Tire (Master craft) and it is both crap made in China or Taiwan. If it is put up against a marginally decent quality fastener it will fail, compounding your issues.

I would stick with stuff made in the west (Europe or North America) or Japan.
I have a set from Alden (US made) that appears ok.

Okay, I just completed the operation, and LMT owners need to know what I found out to save themselves time and money: Bought a set of Riobi extractors because they were the only thing I could find after visiting several hardware stores. Wasn't sure if it would fit the pre-tapped holes in the face end of the screws. Got home, applied WD-40 and let 'er soak a bit, then tried to tap in the smallest extractor (A number 1), which did not fit in the least. I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to drill it out, which I only talked myself up to with a little liquid courage. Got out the drill and a 1/8 bit, set it in the hole, and gently pressed the trigger... and it backed right out. Immediately. Looked at my drill, was set in reverse.

WD-40. 1/8 drill bit. Drill set to reverse. Save yourself gunsmith cash, save yourself shipping the gun back to the manufacturer. save yourself the cash even for a cheap set of easy outs. It's easy as ####. I couldn't believe it.

Heavy sigh of relief.
