Hi Guys,

I have a question concerning the differences between the 3 & 6 moa Re Dot Scope on a Pistol.

I've recently bought my 1st Pistol a Glock G35 Gen 4 in 40 S&W. I Intend to push the capabilities of the longer sight radius & shoot it out to the farthest distances I can.

My question is: bearing this in mind, which would be the better option for me, the 3 or the 6.
One dot is obviously going to be larger than the other I would have thought surely so will that make a difference ?
The scope I'm considering is a Vortex Venom.

Hoping some experienced shooters here can jump in with some crucial advice here!

Many Thanx

First off is your going for distance and a 40 if avoid the venom, go razer

3 vs 6 is an easier way of saying precision or speed...

At 100yards 3moa covers 3 inches of target up and across and 6moa covers 6” up and across.

At regular pistol range 5y to 25y 6 moa is faster because you can pick up the dot easier. At 100y+ the 6moa dot covers most or all of the target and is impossible for precision work. The 3moa dot is much better at distance as it covers less of the target.

I’m my observation very few are able to shoot pistol beyond 50y and especially a 40 but hey if you can great! The other option is a 6moa dot but high end persision fixed sights for further out work. Past 100y your aiming well over the target anyway and lobing them in there.

Best of luck!

you answered your own question if long range is a factor go with the three if speed and close target go with the six but a lot of guys do well with either one . I have both and I prefer the three for Bulleye and the six for pins . I have several Venoms great bang for the buck nice clean dot easy adjust and great battery life . My C-Mores are also good but battery life and cost is not as good.

As above.
My Sig P320Rx came from the factory with 3 MOA
My SW Victory has a Bushnell First Strike at 5 MOA
Shooting bullseye at 25 yards, I can tell the difference. 3 MOA is more precise.

Definitely go with the 3 moa.
It is not so small that you cannot see it and 6 moa gets chubby.
You can acquire the 3 just as fast as the 6.

FWIW, I had the same questions about year ago, and I went with 3MOA. I took a peek at both and didn't like the 6MOA as much as the 3MOA. My problems with acquiring the dot have more to do with lack of practice/experience on the MRS than anything else.

I chose the Vortex Venom in a 6 moa for short range shooting and fast target aquisition. There is no point for me to shoot a handgun out to 100yds. I have a SG for that.

I have both ,like the viper as you can change the battery with out taking the sight off.
If you shoot bullseye as I did for years, 3 is what you want.
I have a 6 on my 1911 as I am shooting some steel out side and find it is better to pick up fast ,which I am not , bty
On the 6, you can get a nice crisp dot , it you back the brightness way down for paper shooting, and indoor range .
I find that the auto adjust takes some of that away, on mine any way.
I have not used either a lot, as I seem to be shooting my S-W M19 more, but that is a thought, I do have a mount that will fit it also.

Personally, I prefer the 3moa over the 6moa. If you are shooting competitions with relatively short distances, then the 6moa is a little quicker to pickup. For me, I just up the brightness on my 3moa to where it just blooms if I need faster acquisitions.

I have a slight astigmatism. So I found that the 6 MOA didn’t starburst as much in comparison to the 3moa red dots. So unfortunately upping the brightness on a 3moa dot just caused the dot to flare up and was almost unusable. . With the 6moa I can keep the intensity lower but still get a nice crisp dot for short range shooting and up to bullseye distances.

I use the 6 MOA Venom for 25 yards or less. It works equally well with a pistol or 22 rifle.
Out beyond that it's either a red dot/HWS with a 3x magnifier or an optic like a 1-6x24 scope.
