I've been in the muzzleloading hunt for a few years now and have strictly shot sabots. I just bought a T/C Encore and figured I'd give conicals a try. I'm assuming conicals are lead "tubes" with lubricant infused into bands in the bullet a la TC maxi hunters? Anyway, I was at 25 yards with 100 grains of pyrodex, as well as trying with two pyrodex pellets. I couldn't do better then a foot group! Either my tired eyes are catching up with me or something is wrong. I just shot the powder and bullet with lube. Am I supposed to use a patch? and if so, why and how. thanks in advance

No patch required with the conicals i use the t/c bore butter on my PRB Keith Nose HP under 75 gr 777 powder and it groups under 2" at 100yds try useing less powder and get rid of that super corosive pyrodex.

I've been using bore butter as well.
seriously, I can pull a trigger and I couldn't pull off better than a foot group.....any other ideas?

The Encore should shoot conicals fine with the 1:28 twist :? I use 348 grain power-belts with three pellets and get amazing accuracy with them. :?
But I am curious why do you want to shoot conicals...?

I gotta think that the problem is with the conicals. My encore shoots 3 50g 777 pellets and a hornady sabotted sst with outstanding accuracy. The sabots give the gas seal on ignition, conicals have gas blow by. TC encore is probably the most well built and accurate ML rifle out there, so its gotta be the straight lead bullets with butter lube.

I had a encore that would not shoot conicals sabots were fine. The problem was with the QLA , I cut it off and recrowned the barrel and it shot them great.
If the qla is ligned up correctly with the bore it will work but many of them are not.

QLA? and you say encore has this, i thought encore was supposed to be the best?LOL
Cut it off, recrown, and how much do they cost before improvements?

The Omega aint far off in the terms of quality IMO, but it can't shoot conicals at all!

Maybe I should give them another chance though....

Personally, I like the QLA. It works like a charm in the field, and I cannot ask for more as my Omega is MOA at 100 yards (with saboted JHP Hornady XTP's)

I had'nt had the chance nor will I ever probably use a conical in my in-line(s),
There's just too many "good" sabot's out there,I could be very well be defeating the purpouse of using lighter projectiles in a sabot as I use a 300gr .458 FNHP outta mine,so conicals tome,at this time seem pointless to use in my in-line(s),but I would not hesitate to use them in my sidelock.
When Thompson/Center came out with their in-line m.l.'s they were'nt holding back, that's for sure. They had a foresight into the in-line industry that definately brought them to the top of the in-line industry if that makes sense.
If there was'nt a such thing as an Encore I'd probably be shoot'n an Omega,One things for sure, what ever the style,it'll say Thompson/Center;)
This is my .02 cents
&
My Opinion:)

If you are adement about shhoting conicals, try the Lee Improved minie. It has a hollow base with thin walls to expand on ignition, giving a gas seal. Conistant gas seal is going to give you consistant bullet flight.
