considering switching from 12g to .44 mag for bush gun

Hey folks.

So as the title says Im considering switching to .44 mag for a bush gun. I'm on a fairly large piece of wooded property in rural Ontario and right now for my hikes and firewood gathering I'm bringing my 18" 590a1 out. It's weight is manageable as I'm used to it. It's the typhon camo version and thus far it's been impervious. The pattern itself is wearing off night he gray primer underneath has been incredibly durable. I've out the gun through hell and have had zero issues with it.

Only considering switching over because of weight and just want something different in general. Plus I don't have a lever.
Just looking for opinions considerations (trades?).

There's a particularly aggressive large pack of yote here. Plus the neighbor has apparently been baiting bear. Cougars on people's trail cams etc.

Any input appreciated

I switched to a lever action mdl94 trapper in 45 colt a long time ago. More pleasant to carry, more accurate and longer range. And I have no doubt a hot loaded 45 colt will dump a black bear.

If I think there is a good chance of grizzly encounters, it’s yime for the NEW KING.
 
I think 44 Mag and 45 LC are 6 o' one and half-dozen o' the other (with handloads). If you can pick up a 454 Mag, then you'd have a significant edge. Big advantage with the 44, though, is you can get ammo almost anywhere, and it will be full power loads. 45 LC is much harder to find, and in low power loadings.
 
I really like 44 as a short range deer gun.

Ive shot two (own one myself). Both shoot well to 75m and "minute of deer" to 100m. I would not stretch further then that with either of the two Ive got trigger time on.
 
My Winchester 1400 bush gun works nice fer me and ain't too heavy, plus I like the ability to switch between slugs and shot loads quickly if needed.

I also have me Rossi baby carbine in .45 Colt that's a peach to carry and can dummy a bear easy enough with 300 gr cast pushed out at 1200 fps inside 80 yds from a blind or stand. Modern 45 Colt brass like the Starline stuff I use can take pressures well above the old standards in a modern made lever rifle. Just don't go silly with 'er is all.

How does the .45L compare to .44nag in terms of accuracy power range etc. Recoil is not an issue

If you are using factory ammo, then the 44 Mag is the way to go. If you are a handloader and willing to work up a load, the 45 Colt will equal or exceed the .44 very slightly.

The 44 mag is the easier path, but I have always preferred the Colt.
