Newbie ... both CGN and hunting in general

Looking at entry level .308

Looking at

Mossberg Patriot or patriot predator
Ruger American or American predator
Savage Axis II
Thompson Center Compass

Anyone familiar?

Question ... do the synthetic stocks have a big impact on accuracy (stock flex, etc) in the 100 to 300yd range ...

watched lots of youtube video (probably a bad thing) .... wondering if there is really any big difference in accuracy among these rifles in the 100 to 300yard range. Doesn't seem to be ... they all claim single MOA accuracy.

Just curious about entry level guns as I am just getting into hunting to share some time with my sons. Any info / insight from members will be appreciated

My advice would be to shop for a great used 308 rifle. Depending what you are looking for the earlier rifles most times are better quality then new. With used you will also save a few dollars and can invest the difference in a quality optic. Just my two cents ... and I have a soft spot for older Browning rifles myself you can't go wrong with a 308 BLR or A bolt in Ontario.
 
I’d narrow that list down to the Ruger American and savage axis. I have an American and I quite like it. Guys will complain about the fit and finish of the Ruger, and it has a “zippy” sounding bolt action. But once I worked mine in it was really smooth. I find the synthetic stocks flex but for hunting applications I don’t see it as an issue. I don’t own one but I don’t hear too many bad things about the axis apart from the usual fit and finish/ and or people finding them ugly. Handle as many as you can, one could look great but feel awkward.

A quality used 308 at the same price as an entry level new would be my suggestion as well. Lots of excellent 308s always up at the reputable online auctions like Switzers etc often with a decent scope mounted. :)
 
i have two axis both 223 and 308 and i have never looked back accurate out of the box goodness and doesn't break the bank

.308 is a fantastic and versatile round.

I'd look for a good used Remington 700 on the E&E. Take your time and you can find something good. The great thing about the 700 is you can build it into anything you want as you figure it out.

Several suggested the Howa/Weatherby. That would be where I would look first. In fact that is where I have been looking, but they always seem to be sold out. My present 308 is a Savage 1895 Centennial, fantastic shooter, with the Williams peep at the rear.

I am an occasional hunter, Whitetail, and my go to caliber is the '06. IMO the 308 is also an excellent Whitetail round, but it wouldn't be my first choice for Elk. For Elk I'd want something a bit flatter shooting with a bit heavier bullet. It is fortunate that we can own more than one rifle.

One downside, a 308 should be in a light rifle, and easy carry gun, but as I found out, it does kick a bit more than you'd expect. If you prefer a heavier gun, '06 is a better way to go.

My 308 just loves the Hornady A-Max 155 gr, so accurate it makes me giggle.

only place I can find more than one Howa in the shop is international shooting supplies in surrey BC
