contemplating my first .308

Don't touch a Mossberg with a 10' pole. Terrible reliability; you'll be super frustrated - a lot of magazine/feed issues; if you don't mind using them as a single shot then they're passable, but still not worth the money. Doesn't matter what model Mossberg, unless it's a shotgun avoid it.

Savage Axis are reliable, but you get what you pay for with fit an finish - fine for a first rifle though, and accurate. I'd agree with other posters on the 'better quality but used' option. There are also some hidden gems out there - the Stevens 200 being one (made by Savage). You can find them used, unfortunately they've held their value because they're so accurate, but being under $400 new you might find one in the $350 range - if so, buy it. Mine outshoots my $1000 rifles all day long. I've also heard great things about the Ruger American, but no personal experience on that one. Good luck!

No shortage of good used 308's on the EE. I'd look for a Ruger m77

Yeah, no shortage of .308's on the E&E ... except the one I'm looking for !!!

Been looking for a Remington 700 .308 BDL or CDL, walnut stock, bottom metal, blued, in very good condition for my Dad. He's been wanting one for years every since he let his go a long time ago. Find just about everything but that one ....
