Hi

Ive noticed i can still sign up for a controlled deer hunt untill the end of august, but i dont understand what that means. I want to hunt in west nipissing in ontario - wmu 42 for a buck or doe this fall.

Can someone explain what a controlled deer hunt is and how it differs from anterless deer hunt.

Whats the process to sign up? I currently have my small games license only.
Thanks

A controlled deer hunt is a means of controlling the number of people hunting in a given area at s given time. If you apply and are accepted you will be given a validation cer that allows you to use your deer tag in the controlled hunt. No extra tag comes with the controlled validation.

Controlled is the Shotgun or Muzzleloader season in the more populated parts of the province that don't have a Rifle season.... I don't think 42 is included in the controlled hunt.

You hunt in more populated areas of southern Ontario and you control yourself if you are successful .

I mean no posting pictures and videos on facebooky or the goberment will ...... Yeah !!!

You need to read the regs carefully. I believe that wmu 42 is not a controlled gun hunt Therefore you would purchase your tag anywhere and it would be good for 1 antlered deer (7cm of antler) if you want a validation for an antlerless deer you would have had to apply to the draw before June 30th. Now there may be other opportunities if that WMU offers a second season or a muzzleloader season or a landowner tag????

In a controlled hunt WMU you must first purchase your tag then apply to the controlled hunt draw in the seasonal time frame they allow for the controlled hunt and there may be multiple weeks/ seasons. Controlled hunts are generally shotgun or muzzleloader only. You do not get a 2nd tag just a validation tag that you are eligible to hunt in that season for either or antlered or antlerless deer. The intention of the controlled hunt is 2 fold, 1 to control the hunter numbers in a given WMU in a given time frame and 2 to control the herd based on average harvest success rates.

WMU42 looks to have no restrictions rifle/shotgun/bow/muzzleloader Nov 7-19th. To have gotten an antlerless tag you would have had to apply before June 30th. There is no controlled hunt in that WMU... Your chances would have been appx 32% of getting an antlerless tag based on 2015 results!

Oh sweet, there is no deadline for that?

Correct. You can buy a deer license and a seal to hunt an antlered deer ie "buck" tag at any time, up to and after the hunt. This allows you to hunt in any open regular season anywhere in Ontario. As mentioned earlier it is Nov 7-19 in WMU42 for the gun hunt. In that area, it is ALWAYS the first two full weeks of November.

The draw, which the deadline was June 30th, would have put you into a lottery for an anterless validation to apply to your seal, which would have allowed you to shoot any deer. As you missed the draw, you can now only shoot an antlered deer.

This is NOT a controlled hunt. Its the regular season.

In a controlled gun hunt your tag is valid for either/or antlered or an antlerless deer. Controlled hunts are often times as much about controlling population densities of deer (And don't get me started on how they "calculated" populations and heard densities and buck/doe ratios etc... If they even do any more????) as they are about controlling Hunter numbers for safety. Often times there may be multiple seasons to hunt in a controlled WMU. Ie) WMU 93 where I am (controlled shotgun only). We have 1 week hunt in Nov. and a 1week hunt in Dec.

Definition: for a deer to be considered antlered it must have one antler at least 3" or 7.5cm in length (if not, technically you must use a antlerless tag to seal it) often times antlerless tags are called "doe tags" which is misleading.....buck fawns are also antlerless.

I just looked at the regulations. There is no controlled hunt for 42. And like the others have said, you missed the antlerless lottery. Buy a antlered license and get yourself a big buck. There is 2 bow only seasons for 42. 01 Oct - 10 Nov, and 20 Nov - 15 Dec. The regular season is from 07-19 Nov. The antlerless lottery starts around 01 March, and ends on 30 June. Keep a eye on the hunting board in late February, a few posters will post reminders.

Awesome, happy to hear i can still hunt this fall. Why would i need a seal and a tag? Arent they the same thing?
Whats the cost for an antlered deer seal and tag?
Thx

About 40$, you can do it online. The seal (tag) is whats placed on the animal after harvesting. The remaining part of the licence (yellow piece of paper) would allow you to party hunt with other hunters that have unused tags. Since you are hunting by yourself, then once you tag out (buck only) you are done.
