Controlled round feed action

If a guy has always wanted a rifle with a CRF action which would be a more desirable one to go after? (action only) Which of the two is more reliable? Is one stronger than the other? Which has the better desighn in case of catastrophic failure? (hoping to never find out) Am I overlooking one that is better than both with out getting really expensive? Thanks

that would be a very old Sako,...they used FN actions for thier larger calibers in the 50's....so any FN action....the one Browning used is a good one....another good one is an Interams MarkX...the Remingotn 798 is a version of this action...

If I was building on a CRF action (which is something I keep threatening to do) I'd buy a CZ from Brownells. Or more precisely, I'd have ATRS buy me the action.

I'd rather have a Satterlee, GMA or even Dakota, but $2K is a hulluvalot different from $600!

Buy what you like but the Win. Classics are the best if you want a long mag. Very easy conversion to H&H length. I've got a couple that are now long mags that started as standard calibers. The feed flawlessly. Best lightweight CRF, Husky HVA.

I agree with MTM,

Just the fact you are getting a M98 or one of it's variant will make you happy.

The Santa Barbera (their commercial actions - sold to PH etc) and the Zastava are (were) made on the FNH equipement and under their design, wich they sold to Yugoslavia and Spain around 1972. So, they are, in some sort the continuation of the FNH M98 H-type.

As for Winchester, the pre-64 IS a modified Mauser, too.

The HVA Improved Mauser is, in reality, a crossover between the M94/96/38 and the M98. It shares the same bolt lenght, the third lug, the magazine/floorplate arrangement and the rear shroud with the M98 and the bolt head lugs are of the M94 design (the lugs are longer). And it's a small ring, too.

As far as which one is safest under a catastrophic failure (case head failure i assume), me, I'd want to be behind a good military M98 with a full C-ring and thumb slot

Between the 1640 and M70, the 1640 has better gas protection with the full sized M98 style shroud that completely blocks the left rail opening. The 1640 also has a true third safety lug, the M70 uses the bolt handle as a safety lug, which would be great, except it is soldered on. I don't personally worry too much about gas handling or third lugs, though others may. The M70 has a much better trigger and safety, as well as shorter firing pin travel (faster lock time). It also can take a 3.600" cartridge with minimal fuss. Either, if used in the original cartridge configured for, will be reliable and amply strong.

Nice blued/wood would be BRNO or CZ. If you want stainless, get a MDL 70 or Ruger Hawkeye.
