Controlling coyotes in your yard?

Hi folks.

There are at least three coyotes patrolling my property at night - typically they're around between dusk and 2am. They've eaten neighborhood cats and small dogs already.
Raccoons, skunks, foxes make their rounds too but they don't bother me at all. But we have small kids playing in the yard sometimes and three large coyotes worry me.

What is the legality of shooting these? I'm not urban but not really rural either (if I was rural I wouldn't be asking). More like a vacation area that backs onto a Provincial park. I'm not a farmer and don't have any livestock.
I checked the by-laws and there was nothing about discharging firearms except one bit prohibiting the discharge of firearms/bows/crossbows/airguns on municipal property.

Coyotes/wolves are in season all year in my WMU (76). So with a small game license on my own property I can shoot them during legal hours?

Another problem is that I only see them rarely around dusk and they're on the road. They come on the property around 10-2am which is past the legal hunting times.
Any advice or suggestions other than "put up a fence"?

cheers

I'm trying to avoid snares or traps unless as a last resort. There are foxes, skunks, racoons around that I get along with that I don't want as collateral damage.
Also a few of the warier neighborhood cats that managed to avoid being eaten so far...

I guess I'd be limited to a .22 with subsonics, since even if it's 100% legal if they heard something like a .223 half my neighbors would probably s**t their pants.
I swear this is the worst part of being "semi-rural" or whatever you call my situation: You have all of the wildlife problems of remote rural life, but your hands are tied when it comes to dealing with them.

Does anybody in this country sell the Metrogun extended chokes?

Despite being just a really long barrel extension, under our draconian Canadian laws I'd be worried someone might interpret them as silencers.
a prohibited device is any device designed or intended to muffle or stop the sound or report of a firearm.

I'd also be worried about hanging 3 feet of barrel from my choke threads and the last couple inches of paper-thin barrel. That can't be good for your gun even if you can walk around with a 6 foot barrel and not bump it into anything.

This is probably your best bet. Or you could get a livestock guardian dog ? I'm sure one would love the exercise!

But the all night barking will drive you and your neighbors bonkers, plus they clear your property of absolutely everything. Yes though, our akbash has been the best investment we've ever made.

I'm always worried that she's gonna get tricked and led out too far from the house by a small pack or group, but so far she's been a champ.

Dispatching varmint that pose a threat to your property is not hunting. Not sure about your municipality but I legally poison, trap as well as shoot critters that find their way into places they are un welcome. From my recollection, the after dark discharge prohibition is also waved under these circumstances, however out of courtesy for my community I have not done so.

Yeah trapping them or poisoning them (if legal) would be easy.
The problem is that there are a bunch of other critters I have absolutely no problem with around that I really don't want as collateral dmg.

I'm not even sure these are coyotes - they're larger/beefier than the coyotes I've seen - I suspect they're coywolves (unless someone more experienced cares to chime in?).
