Stripper will not damage the checkering if your careful and don’t use a scraper. You do have to be careful if your stock has white line spacers such as what Weatherby and others were using years ago, these are plastic and the stripper will melt them so you will have to sand these areas.
Someone mentioned masking off the metal but I’d never do that, just remove the stock altogether, that way you can get oil finish into the bare wood hidden by the receiver.
As previously mentioned, stripper these days isn’t nearly as effective as strippers of the past its not just as easy as applying the product, waiting a couple of minutes then scraping the varnish off. This new stuff can be frustrating to use and will normally involve applying thickly and wrapping in plastic for 24 hours or so. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times.
Once stripped, steam out any dents then start sanding. Sand with the grain and work your way to finer grit but make sure the wood is very dry as you gat into the finer grains as the damp wood will make globs on the sand paper and leave scratches. Don’t use steel wool as the newer Chinese stuff is garbage and leaves steel strands in the wood which can rust. I prefer scotch brite pads as I get into the final sanding. As has been stated previously by myself and several others, make sure you don’t sand off any edges that are supposed to be sharp!
