Hey new to the calibers and also Ar platform can you convert a ar-15 in 5.56 to a 300 black out? What would you have to do and how much work is involved?

Thanks in advance!

Ps what other caliber could to convert a 5.56 into?

If you’re willing to buy a new bolt there are a lot of potential calibers that will fit in a AR15 length action. 6.8spc, 6.5 grendel, 450 bushmaster, 458 socom, 50 Beowulf, 224 valk, etc.

Looking for something that I could take moose hunting with potentially.... I guess barrel twist would be dependant on the caliber then.

I’m no expert, but I think I’d want something a little bigger than .300 blackout for moose. I mean, sure you could probably pull it off, but why would you when there’s so many other options?

Id go with the 6.5 grendel, you may want to install an adjustable gas block and switch out your buffer and buffer spring as well as the bolt in the bolt carrier.

Should be good for deer hunting up to 300yds, however im not sure Id go moose hunting with it.

My 2cents.

300blk is the same bullet as a 308. Bullet is not the issue it's more than capable at taking down moose. Depending on setup, it's usually with a shorter barrel and better suited for short distances.

yes, i understand projectile diameter. But I was referring to the cartridge as a whole. Even comparing it to the .308 Winchester, the 300 blk has lower velocity, case capacity, ballistic coefficient, ft/lbs of energy, and not nearly as flat of a trajectory.
