Converting 30-06 cases into 270

I have a truck load of once fired 30-06 cases. I sized a few into 270 but of course the neck is shorter. Can I still use these reformed cases for 270 loads?

Thanks for your help!

You'd be looking at a roughly .050" shorter case.

They'll most likely be below minimum but that doesn't mean too much in itself. So long as they are soft enough to obturate at the used chamber pressure and there is enough neck to hold onto the cases, they'll "work". Accuracy will sometimes suffer a little from short necks (inconsistent tension maybe?) and they likely wont be able to take a crimp at all (since the part of the neck the dies are designed to crimp at simply isn't there) so you'd be relying on neck tension alone to hold the bullets in place. I'd use standard OAL, not seat any deeper to compensate for the shorter neck. That way your case volume remains the same so your pressure should be consistent with normal brass loads.

I use converted cases like this in several rifles (using 7.62x54R brass in an 8x58RD rolling block at the moment; necks are 4mm too short) but if I'll be using it in anything but a single-shot rifle I will single-feed and not use the magazine since there isn't a crimp. Some people say they've never experienced bullets using only neck tension moving (in or out of a case) but I figure there's no harm in single-feeding since I don't use converted cases like this for hunting.

LUTNIT- I have never crimped any of my loads, but thanks for those insights. Great idea about not seating any of the bullets deeper - I will give that a try. Would there be any issue of fouling happening in the gap created by the case being .050" shorter case?

I have resized 30-06 cases to 270. I think they end up about a tenth of an inch shorter than standard 270 cases, but they work fine in the 270 and I have never seen any deterioration of accuracy with them. A 270 lengthens with firing quite a bit and these shortened cases actually needed trimming, before they wore out.
There would be a problem if you were crimping to a groove in the bullet, but I never crimp for a bolt action rifle.
The resizing to 270 will go much smoother and easier if the 30-06 cases are first annealed.

It's possible but rifle powders tend to be quite clean burning. Some revolvers have a problem with this (38 special/357 magnum and 44 special/44 magnum) where a dirt ring will form but with the extra force from the mechanical advantage of the bolt I can't see it being a problem unless you're shooting some terribly dirty loads (like black powder dirty).
