I was thinking on trying another 8mm cartridge other than 8x57 mauser. This is not on the level of trying to be practical but more on wanting to play with something new. I have several 8x57s on hand so reaming one out is what I'm leaning towards.

The rifle I'm thinking on choosing is cz 550 and for cartridges that appeal to me is 8x60, 8mm-06, 8x64, or 8x68.

Any thoughts or advice on cartridges in 8mm or where reamers can be found for such cartridges?

Or I can just buy a 325 WSM or 8mm Rem Mag and sell one of the 8x57s.

Please feel free to input your opinion or advice.

There are no flys on the 8mm-06.

That CZ550 is plenty strong enough to be able to load it to very impressive velocities with 196 grain bullets.

Also, you won't have to open up the bolt face and alter the extractor on your existing bolt. It will do anything that the 8x60 or 8x64 will do but the 8x68 is another step up in power.

There are a lot of advantages to the 338-06 over the other cases you mentioned. Easy availability of cases for one thing.

If you want more out of the 8mm-06, chamber to an 8mm-06 Ackly Improved, with a 20degree shoulder, one caliber neck length and a one degree body taper for easy extraction.

Years ago I did one in 8mm and 338. They came very close to any of the magnums in performance but I just couldn't take the recoil

The only reason I replaced the 8mm-06 was that back in those days, good bullets were not only hard to come by but really took a chunk out of the pay check. The 338 barrel allowed a much better variety of good bullets. Like the 35 Whelan, if any of the Moose, Deer, Elk that were shot with any of them, none of them would have been able to tell the difference.

There are quite a few 8mm's to choose from. 8mmGibbs (case capacity 73.5 grs.H20), 8mm/06 (70grs H2o), 8X60 (64grs H2o), 8X63 swede (73.0 H2o) 8X64 (69.5grs H2o)

8X68 (86.0grs H2o), 8mmARP (105grs H2o).....The list goes on. I'm a fan of the 8X63 swede. It just depends what's going to scratch your itch.

Nothing wrong with any of the calibres mentioned however if you are looking at an 8mm-06 you are looking at a wildcat so ammo is 100 % handloaded so I would suggest giving the 8mm-06 Ackley Imp. You will see an honest 100 fps over the std 8mm-06. 06 cases can be easily fireformed with no case forming required. Neil Suttill in Meadow Lake sk has reamers to do this. He does V good work and is reasonable. Shoot me an E-mail and I will share some loading info with you.
