I have a Rem long action M700 BDL in a .270 Win caliber I would like to convert to a .308 with detachable magazine;

Can this be done simply by rebarreling or is there more to the process? The cartridge rim diameter (.473") and base for both calibers seem to match but, wondering if there is going to be any other bolt face / lug or receiver issues?

I'm guessing the magazine for the LA .270 will work fine for the shorter .308 cartridge??

Any suggestions on a good Gunsmith? Input and advice welcome as I'm new to Remingtons and this site for that matter.

Thanks for the reply 303carbide. I just may do that.

The rifle is somewhat neglected and needs some TLC. I'm not an expert but, the barrel is starting to get pitted and may need to be changed in the very near future. I can't tell you how many rounds have gone through the rifle or how often it was cleaned as it was a "hand me down" from the family.

I really like the .270 as well, but I figured if I was going to rebarrel the thing I might as well rebarrel to what my friends are shooting (if possible).

Any other takers?

A simple rebarrel will change the calibre. The Remington detachable magazine may or may not work with .308 cartridges. The magazine may need to be blocked.

Go 30-06 and will run just fine. 280 if you want really nice LR ballistics. 270 cause you already have the stuff. 6.5-06 as a superb LR alternative. All are excellent options with the least amount of changes and feeding woes.

The 308 in a long mag is just one headache waiting to happen.

Hey - Thanks for all your helpful comments everyone. I guess the verdict on the SA .308 is out. I wont go there.

Thanks to the person who emailed me with the info on the "parent case" of the .270. I didn't realize the .30-06 cartridge spawned the various "wildcat" and factory calibers out there.

That .280 sounds tempting, but ammo availability up here is a big factor for me. We don't exactly have a wide selection of local ammo...

Arctic Bullet,

I was cruising another forum site (Western Canadian Hunting) and there is a Remington 700 wood stock with new Burris FF II 3x9 scope & Leupold rings.

The guy is asking $700. The rifle is 7 years old. He is looking for a 338.
So if you want a 308, its seems like a fair price for the setup.

Thanks folks. I found a gunsmith and will be swapping out the barrel back to the .270. I'm also getting a new floor plate for the DM with some spare 4 clip mags. Mighty Peace; I will also check out the WCH forum for that .308...

This site's a blast!
