Converting a carbine barrel to mid length

Unless I missed something,

If the gas port is a full 30 degrees off, when you drill the new port in the correct position, the gas block should completely cover the old port, should it not? You wouldn't even have to plug it...........

While gas port diameters vary, two ports that close together could darn near overlap in the bore. Could make a bit of a mess of the bore.

At 30 degrees you would have a max. theoretical overlap of .005" starting .01" away from the grooves (assuming a .063" gas port). Not ideal I suppose (not that a misaligned gas port is ideal lol) but I don't know how different it would be from the normal erosion that occurs on the bore side of the port.

Or.

Perhaps a groove could be milled either in either the ID of the gas block or on the OD of the barrel journal so as to redirect the gas back to the proper orientation. Sort of along the lines of how some companies mill a small slot on the inside of the gas block so you can't partially obstruct the gas port on a normal install.

If you make a new port beside it at 30 degrees beside the original, you would be looking at 0.0586" center to center for the ports on the inside of the barrel (may need someone to verify my math though). If the port diameter is bigger than that, you will be overlapping the ports inside the barrel.

I do think that refitting the barrel extension would produce the best results.
But if a 'smith has to be paid to do it, the free barrel may not wind up being that much of a bargain.

Can you move the new gas port forward but only a 1/4 inch then cut a mid length gas tube to fit. That way the gas block plugs the old hole, you use shims so the gas block doesn't slide back the 1/4 inch. And that way the holes won't be so close in the barrel. You'd have to secure (weld?) the shims in place and the barrel would have to be .750 the extra 1/4 inch as well.
Don't hate too much, just trying to help
