Converting Detachable Mag to Top Feed

Hey all,

I recently bought a Savage 11 FCXP3 with a detachable mag.

Would like to know if anyone has converted a similar DM style action to a Center feed or Staggered feed. And if so, what would I need to complete such a task?

I have a boyds CF stock and was thinking if I can't sell it, that maybe I would try to convert it. I don't think I have the skill to chop out the bottom wood to install the bottom metal from my synthetic stock, not sure if I can do it without messing up.

Ideas? Links?

Ahh .. that's good to know.

Personally I don't like the tupperware that the rifle came with. The fore end has too much play in it. You can bend the stock L/R with very little pressure, and is very noticeable when I got it on a bipod. I was hoping that there was an easy way around this but it looks like I am in for some work if I decide to try butchering a nice Boyds to make it work.
 
I think you mean conversion to top load, center and stagger feed refers to how the shells sit in the magazine, [refer to Boyd's website for more on this]If you have your Savage manual that came with the rifle it will show the parts breakdown for the variations of your model, there is a magazine retaining clip shown in the top loader drawing. You can phone Savage direct and they will sell you that clip as well as a longer front action screw [required for a laminate stock]for under $10, [I got two of each for $12 incl. shipping] Then you take the bottom off the mag and install the mag and spring assembly in the well. I had to do a very little bit of dremel tool work to make a little room for the retaining clip on the Boyd"s stock. feel free to contact me through this site if you need drawings or more specific advice although I am sure you will get enough advice on this thread.

Woke up, grabbed a coffee and did as you mentioned. The box and spring dropped in nicely, a little snug but the fit was well. The only problem I have is when I cycle the bolt. It gets hung up on the rear part of the feed lip.

The manual that came with my rifle was for the Edge/Axis version of the 11 series I guess. And no such parts diagram was included in the manual that depicted the magazine retaining clip that you mentioned. I imagine that this is what I need to keep the rear of the mag box down and clear of the bolt.

Would you happen to remember the part numbers of the retaining clip and front action screw?

Yes that clip holds the rear of the mag in place, sorry I do not have the part # but if you phone Savage and have your serial and model # I am sure they will help you. I have one of the envelopes that the parts came in, there is a # written on it, I am not sure if it is 102794 or 102799 and I do not know if that was the clip or the screw. Good luck, Hugh.
