I just got dads fairly old progressive press to do some 45acp. It is set up for 38spl. If I buy the whole shell plate carrier #2 will it be set up for the large pistol primers? It's about 60$. I know you can buy just the shell plate but what do you need to switch to the other primer size? If its simpler to jut change the whole carrier I'll just do that.

The shell plate carrier will have the correct primer feed for the intended cartridge.
Watch out for 45acp brass with small primers.

+1, and obviously the dies as well. if there is a shell feeder, that will have to change round too unless they ship with the shell plate carrier comes with it.

It has different discs to measure out the powder. I notice the new ones have what looks like a powder drop. Is the new system better? I'm thinking that adding a few tenths of powder would be easier with the new system.

I threw away the primer feeder system from mine. Too many jams and problems which eventually ended up with me ruining a new HK USP 45 tactical.
Now I run all brass through it with only the sizer/decapper, then inspect every piece for primer size and any problems with the brass before priming it with my RCBS hand primer, then I throw it all back in the hopper and put the expander/powder die in and the seater die (I leave the sizer in but remove the decapping pin so the brass stays lined up in the tray). It takes longer but is much safer and more consistent.

You will probably need a new brass feeder system (as mentioned earlier) for large pistol, I have complete case tray, die holder and feeder tubes for 9mm, 45auto and 10mm. Wholesale sports carries all of it most of the time.

Good luck and be careful.

The newer style auto disk has a shut off ; and in my experience less likely to get over centered and cause a squib.
I like that.
If they're making a pro 1000 with a micrometer adjustable measure that's pretty good too.

P.S: The primer feed is pretty weak, It works better when its more than half full (the feed not the reservoir).

For powder charges under 3.5gr the micrometer measure doesn't work too good. I just find the best load with the discs, I could always enlarge them to make a custom size.

For the primer feed I find small pistol primers feed way better then large regardless of how many are in the tray. Once I see all the primers are out of the tray, I add more.

Sounds like it may be finicky but I don't mind tinkering a bit. I tried the brass feeder and it seems like it will work as is. How many rounds per hour do you guys get when things are rolling? I will probably be doing 1000 each time I'm goin to reload.

My absolute best with primer trays already loaded (3) powder Hopper full and brass on hand was 500 in an hour. But normally 350 I would say, but I never really timed it accept for that one time.

It's definitely a press that requires attention, but will work great if you don't mind giving it attention.
