Convince me to buy a 45-70

The .45-70 is a really neat cartridge. I have a number of them. Mostly I shoot black powder and use single shot rifles, which is more fun than you can imagine, especially at the longer ranges.

This is especially true! The old 45-70 really comes alive with a case full of black Powder under a 500 + grain cast bullet..

I'll convince not to get one. I just got back from a Stone Sheep hunt (Tuchodi River area) and the guide carried a 30-30 on his horse. I asked why not the 45-70 and he said 'It's too heavy of a rifle and I could go 10 years before I need to use it'

I load paper patched bullets in front of full cases of powder. 330 gr lyman hp bullets get about 46-48 gr of IMR 4064, while 405 gr bullets get a full case of varget, about 57 gr. I adjust my load based on length of the loaded cartridge.
Then I go gopher shooting. Gophers aren't safe behind their hills anymore... And it's great practice for hunting later... My friends get mad at me that I can shoot the gopher s that they're waiting to pop up... :D
I took a telephone pole and hung it lengthwise. Then I shot into the end with the 330 gr hp. It penetrated about 6 feet into the pole measured with a 1/4" steel rod I had handy... No such thing as cover when being shot at with that gun, unless you're using a whole hill...
Mine came with a pachmyr decelerator pad. I swapped it out for a limbsaver. The limbsaver was much better.

I do find it amusing that my 45/70 has just a hard plastic buttstock while my .243 and 30/30 handy rifles have rubber buttstocks.

Hmmm...I'm thinking the limbsaver might not be a bad idea lol.

That makes no sense... too heavy? Physical weight can be as light as any .30/30... and he would "need" to use it wherever he "needed" to use the .30/30... and if after a decade, he final did need it... I am sure he would thank his lucky stars that he had replaced the .30/30...

I love the round but could never find a marlin that I wanted to shoot it out of...
I shot a remington rolling block in 45/70 and loved it! Sure throws those steel targets
