Right now I've got a Bushnell 3-9x32 scope (Yes, I know it is for rimfire rifles, hence why i'm posting this.) on my Rem 700 30-06. I get a decent grouping at 100 yards but I want to get serious with shooting, so I think an upgrade would help. I know nothing about scopes, so school me on this.
This is my deer rifle. I shoot generally between 100-200 yards, but some situations have left me shooting at ~50 yards. I've been experimenting with different factory loads to see what my rifle likes best, so far it seems to be Winchester 180 gr. I am going to get into reloading to refine this.
Give me your recommendations!

Thats backwards of me. I have very little use for rimfire scopes, putting old leper centerfire stuff on my rimfires.

Think of the typical shots you would be facing, i dont know your terrain. Perhaps a upgrade in toughness and clarity, but basically the same magnification range. There is a reason for the 3-9 being the most popular. If you have a great deal more shots at less than 100 as compared to over 300, then dont fall into the trap of buying a scope with too high a bottom end. Something with 4- or less, not 6-. If you have a lot of 75yd shots 6+ mag is too much, hard to pick out the animal or even the spot on the animal at close range.

I don't plan on spending much. Maybe up to the $200 range. A lot of my shots would likely be in the 50-200 yard range, it's all bush and logging cut hunting where I am.

Move up a tad and Bass pro has Nikon Prostaff and Vortex Diamondback on sale, both for $229. Redfield Revolution in that price range is also great.

Keep what you have until you can afford a good scope. I suppose this is where someone will chime in and call me an elitist prick but how many times do you want to buy a scope for the same rifle? Two cheap ones cost as much a one decent one.

Dogleg has it right. I have a friend that has bought at least 2-3 cheap scopes for every rifle. Every year or so he looks for a replacement. That gets expensive. Get a Leupold VX3 (VX 111) and you're done forever.

Only a rich man can buy a cheap scope. Save until you can buy a decent Leupold or Zeiss and then don't look back. By a $200 scope and you will replace it every couple/few years.

I just got a weaver SS 4-20x50 for my .308 and it's some scope it tell ya, just wow, it hurt the wallet a little but i was so fed up with the misery and wasted ammo from the previous 200$ budget scope not keeping it's zero and it's lack of reliability...man those were bad shooting days...never again...it eventually fell a apart too geeeshh. This time, i spent almost as much on the rings alone.

If you want to limit the spending at least go for quality and go for a fixed power maybe...no frills, no useless spending. And get a good set of rings too, invest in peace of mind.

I would stick in the 3-9 magnification range, or 2-8 and 3-12 are all great for 50 yards and beyond. $200 gets you a Vortex Diamondback or a Nikon Prostaff, maybe you could swing a Coyote special on sale somewhere, but that reticle is not for everyone (my personal favorite). Redfield revolution has gone up in price but might be found for around $200 on the EE.

You can also get a very good used scope for comparable money. I think the last 1.5-5x Leupold that I bought was $250 or thereabouts.
