So it seems that with target load, the gun works fine for five rounds or so, but using high brass, the thing doesn't lock up. I'm going to assume that this is why i got such a good deal on it, obviously, because other than that its in really nice condition, and only reinforces my belief that buying used firearms is something best left to others...

You need to install a new "Locking Bolt Plunger Spring" You can probably get one from Western Gun Parts. Model 840 Winchester is the same gun I think. Look at Numrich for the schematic.

Had the same problem. Did you oil it recently? Check to see if there's not excessive oil on the faces of the locking parts. It's pretty scarey taking a shot and looking at the back end of a shell. I wiped the oil off with my shirt and it was all good.

The locking bolt and plunger spring may simply need cleaning out as well. If a bit of crud or corrosion is making things stick it won't lock home correctly.

Is the lockup a little shaky? If you can feel any play at all when it's closed this could also lead to the bolt jumping and allowing the action to spring open.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm trying to fix this 84 for someone.
Original problem was weak hammer spring. Installed new on. Now it opens upon firing. Replaced Locking Bolt Plunger Spring with new and same problem.
Barrel locks up tight and is original to receiver. Any clues what the fix is? Locking bolt mating area looks good at the barrel end, but what's causing it to unlock?
