I am thinking of taking dads old Goose gun (12 gauge single shot cooey with fixed choke) and getting it fitted for choke tubes & getting some windage & elevation adjustable open sights fitted & maybe a recoil pad, I am planning on keeping the barrel length close to normal; has anyone out there tried this and if so, what were your results? Best regards Tony. ;)

Nothing wrong with that plan, per se, but if it was a gun handed down to me from my father, I'd be loathe to touch it (except to dedicate one hunting day to his memory every year and to hunt with that gun on that day).

Everyone has different memories of their father and I can respect that. If yours are positive, I'd advise spending the $100 it would cost to buy some other beater to shoot slugs from, and take that Canadian-made Cooey and find a nice cool, dry place for it until such time as your son/daughter or niece/nephew gets old enough to get it as a gift from you.

Better yet, take him/her out shooting grouse with it, THEN give it to them as a gift later.:D

While it certainly can be done, you can probably find a new or good used slug gun for about the same or less than you'll end up spending doing the conversion. And a fully rifled slug barrel is deadly to 100 yards plus.
The best bonus is getting to keep "Dad's old goose gun" intact.
