Hi All,
I have an older Cooey 20gauge that my grandfather gave to me. I've used it for the last couple of seasons for grouse hunting using an ATV. But I find the thing so dam long. Its a 30inch barrel with a full choke. What are my options for getting this thing shortened and a full choke reinstalled. Does the barrel have to be threaded, or is there some cheaper option. I am aware the mod will be more than the cost of the gun. Thanks

I did one for a friend and have ordered new tooling to make the job easier the next time. (have two more waiting to be done locally)

Once I get the tooling (back ordered) I'll be charging $75.00 for the job. Photos below.

Personally I would cut the barrel to the desired length and try it out. I find that a 20 with skeet or cylinder bore works well on chickens with 8 or 9 shot

I'd re-think the whole idea if you want a choke.
"...$75.00 for the job..." A Cooey 20 guage isn't worth much more than that. And that's why I'd re-think it.
A pipe cutter will do the job with no fuss. Assuming no rib. Like Neilm says, little or no choke works well on grouse.

thanks for the replys guys. If I was hunting grouse where I grew up, chapleau. I could definitely get away with a cylinder bore.(or a rock) But the grouse in the north bay area seem a lot more gun shy and its hard to get close to them for a shot. Polar_Hunter I would probably take you up on your offer depending on shipping costs. Where are you located?

The choke in Cooey barrels was created by pressing the muzzle of the barrel into a tapered hole so the last inch or so became swaged down enough to create some choke constriction - sort of like resizing brass rifle cases. If you could improvise or turn the tapered cone on a lathe then press the barrel into the cone to re-create some constriction you would have your choke restored.
