I am hopeing some great gun guru can help me out. I have a cooey 64b and have the original magazine I bought it with plus a new magazine bought recently. I was out plinking the other day using both magazines and had gone through about 100 rounds, when I put the new one in for the next round it clicked into place but when I moved the bolt back to chamber a round the magazine shifted up and jammed the bolt. It had never done that before and the original works fine. I have compared the two and any differences are not visible to the naked eye. The only thing I can think of is the magazine housing assembly is worn or damaged (none visible) Thinking maybey the housing had expanded due heat I tried it again yesterday with the same result first try. Please help me out if you can:confused:

Thanks Tazwillfix

The magazine that holds up too high needs to be lowered by filing a bit where the latch holds it... just a little at a time and test...

But the latch is at the front and it is the back that goes up to high and the notch on both looks identical.

File the rear edge as it is too high....the gun action wears away the leading edge and cycles great but the replacement mags are a bit different and need a slight adjustments to cycle. remember also you are dealing with a 40 to 50 year old gun andthe "new" parts just will not fit right. i have played with these 64s over the last year and slight adjustments are needed for them all.

Thanks very much. I will take a small file with me when I go back to the range and try it. Is it worth buying a new magazine holder?

I do not know if a new mag tube is the answer. Usually playing with the mag gets the job done. The mag tube does not wear the way the mag lips would. Sometimes removing material from the lock indent will drop the mag enough. But round the rear edge first slowly. If you have had it apart and the mag tube removed....be sure the trigger mechanism is installed first then the mag tube . By having them installed backwards can put the mag too high also.

That's some weird rifle you have...

It is a mag tube that the mag slides into from the bottom of the action.... In Savage terms "magazine housing assembly" not the magazine tube that follows underneath the repeater barrels. It was mentioned in the first post it was a semi auto 64 and we do know what the loading mechanism on them look like. Maybe pardon the wording as we are not all gunsmiths.

Sorry - I know what a tubular magazine is...

What confused me about your statements was your reference to a tubular magazine... To my knowledge Model 64B's have never used a tube magazine, they have always used a detachable magazine some refer to as a "clip". But you also stated you have played with these 64's over the last year... did they have tubular magazines?

i had a 64b as my first semi auto. before touching a file, try loading only 8 rounds instead of 10. i had a mag that put alot of compression on the first round or two and the gun wasnt able to strip them off properly.

if experiencing the same problem, do as suggested and file a bit off the top rear of the mag as the others suggested. only take a little at a time off and keep trying until it stops catching the bolt

Here is two pictures one showing the mag in correctly and the second showing it up to high and the bolt jammed on it. Hopefully I will get to the range tomorrow to try to fix it. Sorry my camera is not good enough to get a closer picture

I had the exact same problem. I acquired my 64b with one mag, the original. I purchased a second mag and went out to the range. With the mag fully loaded it would not push the first round out into the chamber because it appeared that the rear of the mag was sitting too high. Rather than mess around with it at the range I just used the original until I got home. When I got home I unloaded a couple of the rounds from the mag and tried it again. Just as gallen270 suggested, it worked find. It seems that there was too much compression. I think the resoultion actually is to take a dremel to the front part of the mag where it is slightly cupped. I think the new mag just isn't worn enough to let the round slide forward out of the mag into the chamber. I haven't tried this yet myself but it's on my list of things to do.

I got the rifle to the range yesterday and putting 8 or less shells in the clip helped alot. I did not bring a good enough file with me so I was not able to try that fix. Hopefully next week I can try again. Thanks again for everyones help
