Cooey 64B restoration project, update page 3

The scope is an el chepo centerx from CT. The crosshair is thick...so a better scope will offer more at 50m or so. Great plinker and looking forward to full semi auto functioning. I have taken off the scope to run this rifle with the original open sights. Should be a fun shooter.

My recommendation is to action/barrel bed those rifles and be sure to stress free bed them. Clean up anything that causes binding or resistance. Very nice rifles once you get used to that trigger. Thanks everyone for looking and by all means....post your ol 64s in the thread so that others may learn about these rifles or any mods that others have tried.

Magazine update

Did some more shooting today with mixed results.

Tried 3 different rounds and results.
Winchester white box HP (Feed about 25%)
40gr solid standard velocity (does not feed)
CCI stingers. (100% feed and fire)

Had improvement with adjusting the clip receiver angling forward a bit. Installed a small washer on the rear screw attachment of the two screw set which holds the clip receiver in place. Be sure not to over torque the forward screw as the metal may be brittle in this area.

Feeding was improved but it still appears that the bolt is not going back enough upon firing.

Then when trying the CCI Stingers....Voila...100% feeding even with the old magazines and new one I purchased for this rifle. So it appears previous advice suggesting High Velocity rounds rule for this rifle. Will have to investigate more ammo types as they become available to see what the rifle likes.

In comparison, I have a modern Savage 64B and it feeds the win ammo very well, however I do get poor feeding results with the standard velocity 40gr rounds. So it appears the modern rifles use a little weaker spring in the bolt assembly.

They both had the beautiful walnut stocks on them and the upgrade is really quite easy if you're basically tool handy. A dremel and hand filing was all that was required to make the magazine stock plate altered to fit the new mags and then it was some polishing and cold blue and presto! I wish I had kept at least one of them, but I have too many as it is. It was just nice to bring the old girls back to life and get a few extra bucks when I sold them.

I have one I want to restore with my son. It has a broken stalk and missing the mag. Where is this magazine upgrade purchased from? Anyone have a a stock they would sell?
 
Mag update 2

Another outing today with some solid point ammo in hand. Before the outing I did mod the bolt striker spring by removing one coil in an effort to take some of the push back out of the action.

Also, I did remove the mag well mod (washer under the mag well screw junction) because I found no real benefit.

I found by placing a finger behind the mag while firing and feeding was improved. So it looks like the mags could use a little forward pressure to tilt the rounds slightly up. Will look into that idea on another date.

Well, I am pleased to report that with the striker spring mod I am now able to run with my original mags the solid point HV ammo without any mis-feeds.

This little rifle is now a joy to shoot. And I bought a supply of ammo to keep me at the range for a little while. Semis love to be fed indeed.

As for stocks... you can get a nice Boyds stock as a replacement. A good investment.
 
We had 2 64s semis out last weekend One is an older Sears C 64B and the other was a 64F Target rifle. Both had been cleaned thoroughly and assembled dry. As the temp was right around zero, I suspect that tolerances had tightened somewhat and the actions were not cycling fully. I gave each a small shot of G96 and only then did they begin to cycle properly. When I tear them down next, I will reassemble with graphite dry lube. That will supply lubricating properties without attracting dirt, dust and grime to the action. As an aside, they both LOVE solid round nose ammo such as Blazer or American Eagle.
 
My dad has an old cooey that he got for $2.50 when he was a teen. The barrel had been painted over with some think black paint. Does anyone have some advice for getting it off? New to the world of restoration but would love to get this old beauty looking good.
