I believe the extra large firing pin lookin piece is a large firing pin. The extractor lookin piece is the extractor.
All your buddy needs is some 0000 steel wool, a tube of epoxy, a cold bluing kit, a bottle of circa1850 stripper, an iron, and a bottle of boiled linseed oil. Strip the stock, steam the dents, glue the cracks, and rum with oil. Clean thoroughly, and reblue with the cold reblue. A bonus item to have is a heat gun, the bluing takes better if the steel is almost uncomfortable to handle. There are various tutorials on here, on milsurps.com in the restoration section, youtube...
