It looks like the bbl on my Cooey Model 75 has moved forward, although I don't see any gap between the barrel shoulder and the receiver ring. I hear people saying it may need an 'unheadspaced' bolt, but I measured the rim depth on the bolt face, which came out to .040", close to full rim depth, The gap between the locking lug and the corresponding way on the receiver is .019". So, what good would an 'unheadspaced' bolt do? Would not pulling the bbl, machining off .019" from the shoulder, and tapping it back into place sort it out? If the bbl is moving in there some how, would it be a good idea to get a cross pin drove in there? I bought the thing used. Also anybody have any ideas on rust removal? I've gotten a lot of rust and gunk off, but I'm down to the black stuff in the bottom of the pits, don't want to use something harsh like Hydrochloric acid, but something milder.:confused:
 
For about $50-75 bucks you can probally find a better Cooey at the next local gun show, that does not have any problems and now you will have a few spare parts to last another 100years of service. As for the surface finish and cleaning up the rust I have put a few cooeys on a lathe and taken off a 1/16 or a 3/32" to clean up rust. I have also shot blasted, black oxided and zinc coated Cooeys for fun. If you take it to a local plater to do such work, they will pre-wash it in de-greasers and light acids that will take care of any rust, per batch of 10 lbs of parts I paid $110 for zinc coating. Its something to concider, I dont think that gun will rust again.

Did you ever replace the bolt on that gun? and does gas and debris shoot out of the action every few shots?
 
I haven't shot it yet, partially for the reason that it does not have an extractor and a proper rear sight:redface: I was planning on getting it set up for a scope, but due to the loading issue, thought a good peep sight might be a better option, I'm waiting on a NECG peep sight for it, have the dovetail already. Course, the front sight will have to be higher. I have to have something to tinker with (that's the problem with becoming a geezer, the other option is not always available):)

The bolt is what came with it, I don't even know if it was the original one, possibly not, with the way it does not exactly fit the gun properly. It looks like someone was firing it like that, as the extractor cut was gummed up solid with grease and carbon, and it looks like they were digging out the casing with a knife(?) WHY??? due to scratches in the rcvr

I've been meaning to post about this for a little while, I got my NECG sight from Brownell's, the clamp for the dovetail is not machined evenly so the thing sits on the dovetail stock crooked(?) and it's not click adjustable. This is not my cup of tea. Now to get off my butt and return it for (probably a credit voucher at this point).
 
Uh if someone has filed the locking lug, I'd say that it is scrap. It really isnt worth it to do any work on it unless you are looking for the experience, or the rifle has sentimental value. For a 50-80 dollar rifle it isnt worth it.

The 75's have nice stocks and heavy barrels though, nice in good condition. But I assure you the reciever cannot take .22 magnum ammo, don't ask how I know that.

Funny, I had one done up in 22 mag and it worked great.....do tell us your experience....
 
Well, the lug that the bolt handle rests against with the action closed cracked pretty badly, kinking the bolt in the action and rendering it useless.

Could have been a crack there before that I didnt notice but I doubt it. Suprised the heck out of me, didn't think the mag had quite that much power.
