It seems that my cooey wants to create quite a large bang not forward where it supposed too but backwards when shooting it in quicker succession (It's a single shot so not too fast). This has happened twice (very scary) and it has always been when it is extremely hot outside. I'm thinking where the bolt locks in the bullet gives a little extra space when it heats up. I'm thinking it doesn't quite close on the back of the shell and there might be a bit of give in the headspacing. Should I be worried? Has this happened to anyone else? It is hard to describe, but I'm not sure how to explain it.

Bang! Are we talking about noise only? Do you mean it sounds like the noise is out the muzzle sometimes and out the breech at others?

To start with, do you ever clean it, is it clean?

Does it do it with different makes of ammo?

Does it make a difference if it is low velocity or high velocity?

What does a fired case look like? Is it bulged at the back? Is it cracked and leaking gas? Does it appear gas is blowing back?

Does it misfire a lot? That would indicate headspace.

It certainly sounds like too much headspacing. A gunsmith can guage it for you and adjust the bolt. I had the same problem that grew to the point of not firing at all. Now every shot goes "bang".. cost me $20.. but each smith charges different.

Ok, to answer a few questions. I'm using federal gold medal ammo. It makes a bang backwards, with some particles as well. So far nothing serious. I clean my rifle after every shoot, just to make sure it's clean. This is what I was tought. No signs of bulging or cracks in the back of the gun. I wonder if it is the ammo? Thanks for all the help everyone.

It sounds like a sloppy chamber and hard brass. Not much you can do about it except try some other ammo.
