cooey 84 question

Hi all,according to wikipedia..."Cooey model 84/840 shotguns that were manufactured BEFORE 1970 do not have serial numbers, the shotguns made BEFORE 1961 are stamped "H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company" on the right side of the action and the guns made after the purchase from Winchester of Cooey are stamped "Winchester-Western (Canada) Limited." on the right side of the receiver." My prob is that I have two Cooey 84's,a .410 and a 16 gauge,the 410 has H.W. Cooey machine and arms on the RIGHT side of the receiver and Cooey model 84 on the LEFT, my 16 has H.W. Cooey on the LEFT side of the receiver and Cooey 84 on the RIGHT,the markings are opposite,the really confusing thing is that they both have serial numbers on the right side of the receiver. s it safe to assume they weremade before 1961 and the numbers stamped later? Just curious,I found it a bit confusing.
 
All of the Cooey shotguns I have, have a serial number including the 84's as well as the brand name ones such as Mercury and Ranger. I also have a couple of 84's that are shortly after the Winchester take over as they have impressed checkering and Cooey did not do impressed checkering. These still have the H.W. Cooey stamping on them and do not say Winchester on them.

All the Model 84/840 shotguns I have seen have a serial number.What is posted on Wikpedia is not always the truth.

The only Model 84 I have at present is marked Cooey Model 84 on the left and Winchester/Western on the right.

Could be the markings were changed durning production at some point in time.
 
Ever Cooey shotgun I have ever seen is numbered on the barrel lug and on the receiver. I suspect that these are assembly numbers, to keep the receiver and barrel together, rather than true serial numbers. They're not interchangable.
 
Tiriaq is correct. I just checked my 84 and the serial--assembly # is on the right side of reciever and on the barrell lug. Left side says Cooey model 84 made in Canada
Right side says H.W. Cooey Macine & Arms CO. LTD. Coburg ONT
 
Interesting note on features of Cooey 84, 840's. I just purchased a 30" 16 bore with mint case colours and well preserved walnut stock. Also marked H.W. COOEY etc. It does not have the screw on the right side of the receiver to remove or change the firing pin. Any idea when that screw was added in production?
