Check it out guys :)

My grandfather's $18 shotgun, passed down to my dad, and then passed down to me.

Could use some fresh blueing .. Anyway here's the good stuff.

Stripped the old finish and stain with circa1850, then sanded the stock down to 600grit

Fixed some cracks around the receiver area with CA glue

I sprayed down the stock with water to get an idea of the final look.... I was impressed with the character of the wood grain, for sure.

I proceeded to coat with tru-oil, buffing with a green scotchbrite pad in-between coats.

Once it started getting pretty shiny I wet sanded with 1500, coated, wet sanded with 2000, coated, and finally finished with rubbing compound, glaze and carnauba wax.

These pics aren't the BEST but.. I can see my teeth in the reflection on the stock.

Not bad for an old gun like this, I'd say.

I'm considering putting a modern recoil reducing butt pad on there. Any suggestions as to a good brand?

What do you think?

I fantasize about grabbing some cheap gun from my safe and stripping off the crappy factory stock paint to find like a thousand dollars worth of figured wood under there (haven't done it yet). You really lucked out, though. Too bad with the carving at the grip you couldn't clean it up 100%, but she looks great. Not selling her, are you?

Amazing how high the quality of the wood on cheap firearms was. You'll even find Cooey single shot .22's with wood like that.

X2 on the kick-eez pad. They grind clean and are nice and soft. Great job on a surprisingly nice walnut stock. My Cooey was birch.
