Hi:

Have a bolt for the 39/75/750/82 series that is too long - cant close the bolt.

The indentation for the cartridge to sit in on the bolt face is quite deep compared to the other Cooey bolts / put another way, the outside rim is quite tall. Two options, grind a bit off the back of the bolt lever so it will close or grind a bit off the bolt face.

The firing pin is generally flush with the outside rim of the bolt face, hence am thinking that if I grind down the outside rim I should also grind down the firing pin so it remains flush.

So... grind down bold or bold face? grind down pin flush with bolt face rim?

Do like the old Cooeys - first time with a 750 last weekend with open sights (top bit of sight missing), and a 60 with 4x scope - 25M, black circle 1" diameter, rings an inch apart. Am I ready for 1000 yards yet?

Cheers

Almost as if the bolt is for a repeater or a single? They will not interchange. they look the same but are slightly different in length and cocking system. If it were the correct bolt, it would fit first time without grinding anything.

If it is a new previously unfitted bolt it will not automatically fit any action unless the action has been altered ...

I have never seen one where the front was incorrect and needed altering. The normal way to fit them is to remove metal behind the bolt handle where it contacts the receiver on closing. You want the bolt to be a bit hard on closing... tight to the rear of the barrel... this insures the headspace is correct.

Think that the repeaters have a different extractor setup as well, two extractors with retaining clip around the bolt.

I sometimes wonder whether the resident smiths read these posts and just shake their heads.

It does look like one of the other bolts had a little ground off the handle, may try that first.

Here are a couple pics - the one with the small knob is the issue (no comments on the size of the knob please, it may get a complex). Looking at where the trigger sits on the bolt, does look it has seen no use. Also, the original extractor been pulled out of the handle with the current one as a replacement fix (it does work).

Terry, recognize the knob on one of the other bolts?

Cheers.

Not that this guy needs anyone to back him up, but I bought a new, previously unfitted cooey bolt from an old guy at a gunshow who was once a cooey service person, and he told me exactly the same. The metal on the bolt handle has to be fitted to the receiver. Also as a little tidbit, if you have one that is worn or fitted too loosely, they can be welded up then machined back down.

The bolt with the small ball may be for a .25rf . The face of the bolt appears to have a larger diameter hole than the other 2. Cooeys were made in .22, .25 and I believe .32 (can't find my book so not sure on the .32).

The bolt on the far right w/ no groves and small dia is from a very early model. The first model made by Cooey, the Canuck had a flat bolt handle and then he switched to this type with the small rnd bolt with no groves. These old bolts are a bit hard to find and would be a shame to start grinding and altering. Easy fix is take the gun without the bolt to a gun show and find a bolt that fits. I also beleive its a 25 cal stevens rimfir bolt. Cooey never made a 32 cal r/f.-----Cowboy

Cec:

I know what you mean about modifying the old bolt but its what I have and no use if not functional. That said, will wait a bit and see what shows up on EE. Work a lot of weekends so no Summerland shoot, missed HACS, all work and no play makes me a boring boy (but have 12 weeks booked off- hooray).

Thanks for the input CGNrs
