What is the diameter of the threads on the 6.5x54 barrel where it screws into the bushing in the receiver - or the diameter of the barrel right in front of the bushing? I have a length of SMLE barrel which might work very well for a 7.62x39 conversion if it could be threaded to fit the bushing.

I think is the same as a win94 barrel. (It is, .809-20tpi)

I've made a few barrel nuts to install these on Lee Enfield.

I want to say 13/16-20 I'll find my die or drawings and double check that though

Tiriaq - my 4th Ed of Bolt Action Rifles by de Haas shows drawings on p.684 which I will summarize.

"Italian Carcano" is 14 V TPI, and the threaded shank is 1.065" diameter and .805" long to the shoulder, itself 1.135" dia. The barrel diameter is .985" ahead of that shoulder. The breech surface is a set of convex steps, each about .050" deep - 1.065" at the barrel threads, then .968", to .835", and down to a chamber bore of about .675".

"Italian Youth Rifle" is less complicated. Again 14 V TPI thread, but .645" threaded length, and .855" outside diameter. The barrel shoulder is .947" and the barrel itself is .815" tapering in front of the chamber to .625".

(and to add)

"Lee Enfield" is 14 V TPI, at .997" diameter and shank length of .687". You know well that there is a stepped breach of .900" diameter.

Hope this helps!

13/16-20 (.809-20tpi) i cant find my drawings but i found my tap and die for this project i had going on. I have made 8 barrel nuts to adapt these cooey arrels to lee enfiels. The die was to cut the threads longer on the barrel without having to pick up the barrel threads on a lathe to do it.

My "classic sporting rifle"build uses one of these barrels on a LEC receiver but with a 6.5x53R reamer ran in it

OK, thanks. This barrel was drilled a few inches from the breech, just in front of the chamber. About .730" diameter in front of the hole.
I've converted a Cooey-Carcano to 7.62x39, by unscrewing the 6.5 barrel from the bushing and threading a piece of .303 barrel to suit. Didn't make a note of the diameter.

It would require a custom bushing to use this barrel in either a Carcano or Lee Enfield. 11/16" would work.

Or I could thread the hole, install a plug and line the barrel to .22 for a No. 2 Mk. IV project. The bore seems to be quite decent, thought it might be good to put it to use.

No problem, good luck on the project. win 94 and 92 barrels are the same thread if you ever wanted to make say a 44-40 or 25-50 or a .308" 7.62x39 rifle on the carcano using the cooey barrel nut
