Hello everyone,

I recently came into possession of a lovely Cooey carcano but she needs some TLC before heading to the range.

There are also some issues to iron out, two of which are with the double set triggers. I am hoping someone with a complete Cooey carcano can snap a few reference pictures for me so I can fix this one.

The first issue is she is missing the bolt retaining block that sits in the right side of the rear bridge. This block is what stops the bolt when retracted all the way to the back. On close inspection of the trigger assembly, the pin that held the block broke off some time again and it is probably why the block is missing.

The second issue is with the trigger themselves. The rear trigger catches but on closer inspection the forward trigger just barely sits in the hair trigger catch and can be set off with only the slightest touch. I will be taking the double set trigger apart to see if I can fix the issue.

As requested before, I would like some photographs for reference of both sides of the double set trigger as it sits on the magazine body and with the hair trigger pulled all the way back to see how the forward trigger catch sits. If possible, a close up of the retaining block and it's pin so I can see how it sits on the trigger group with the hopes of fashioning a replacement pin.

To anyone that can help, thank you :).

Thought I had some photos that may help you out, but I do not (only have the complete rifle photo). I will get some for you this weekend.

Thanks Tinman, I appreciate any and all help with this project.

By the way, do either of your Cooey Carcano's have a serial number with (or without ?) a suffix letter stamps just forward of the rear slight swivel mount and on the tang of the butt plate ? Mine is "730 M" and I would be interested to figure out if this would be in Cooey's records (if those even exist).

K, I just snapped a bunch of pics, gun
was in pieces so it was no trouble.

This one has a nice trigger pull and the set trigger works very well.

Here it is without the rear trigger cocked.

In these shots I'm pulling the front trigger.

Not sure if any of those shots help. Let me know if you need more.

Thank you for the pictures :).

When you pull back on the hair trigger, does the forward trigger's catch sit completely in the hair trigger's claw ? Mine sits forward and makes it a very, very light trigger. I suspect mine may have debris that is restricting movement of the springs but I will investigate tomorrow.

Hmm, that is interesting you have it to. Perhaps this is how they were done ? Seems odd to have such a light trigger as it looks like it could sit further back in claw of the hair trigger.

I'll take some photos of my trigger setup tomorrow and post them for comparison.

I seem to have about the same as you have.

Single-trigger operation is possible but it takes 2 men and a boy to fire it. Still, very safe but not wonderfully accurate, I would think.

Proper set-trigger operation is scary light but it is also UNIFORMLY scary and light. Doesn't seem to play tricks.

I have 2 of them here. Going to have to haul them out and get them running this year. Legs are getting a lot better now; I can manage the stairs a couple times a day. Really puts a crimp in things when you can get into the toy room but you can't make it back up the stairs..... and you're on heavy doses of diuretics! NO fun!!!

Good to hear you are feeling a bit better Smellie!

Mamabear's Cooey, the first trigger alone has roughly (going by feel) about double the pull of using the set trigger. With them set it is about as light as my Savage accutrigger set down as light as it will operate safely, for comparison, but is still a harder pull than Dads Browning BAR. I don't know if that helps any but that's as close to a trigger pull gauge as we have here.

The one I have here has a very nice trigger. Maybe 4-5 pounds with a very positive feel. Like stated earlier the hair trigger could literally be set off by a single strand of hair!! It's that light.

DON'T WANT TO HYJACK THIS THREAD BUT I THINK YOU ALL WILL FIND THIS STORY INTERESTING!!

The one I have here came to the owner in a very strange way.

He told me that about 20 years ago he was living in a very old house that had a rifle shaped dark stain on the wall. He said the spot was there for years and he stared at it woundering why it was there.

Long story short he said he started tapping the wall one day on the spot and could hear something banging around between the drywall. So he said he cut a hole in the wall and there it was!!

Here it is after an evening of scrubbing the rust off. Bore was red and flaky but actuly cleaned up really nice! The chamber is a little rough in one spot so I'm going to test fire it before I proceed any farther with the resto.

The barrel is stamped "6.5 mm" so I'm guessing it's chambered in 6.5x5s??

Now that is a cool find :). She should be in 6.5x54 MS.

Does yours have a serial number on the wood by chance ?

It is good to know my trigger isn't the only light one out there. You guys are right, the primary trigger takes a heck of a pull not to mention it is uncomfortable to use alone.

I'll have to inspect the one here further once I get home. Sadly we finally have a beautiful Saturday with nice weather and I'm stuck at work bashing tin!!

Oh well tomorrow will be a good shooting day. I think we need to have "Rifles of the Swiss empire pt. 2" tomorrow!! Either that or it's time to continue work on my 2 swede target rifles!!

I'm rambling, just so happy the warm weather is finally here!!:):)

I see a few others have beat me to posting some photos for you, but since I already took some I will post what I have. As you can see there are serial numbers on the stock and trigger assembly, also a number (6.5 mm) on the barrel by the rear sight.

And a couple more. I took a few with the triggers in the normal position, then set, then pulled to hopefully show the differences.

Fantastic, thank you :). I will compare to my magazine tonight to see what may be different, if anything.

Anyone else notice the "M" that is stamped sideways on the trigger guard ? Mine has it and it seems some other cooey carcanos do. My military carcanos do not have the mark so I wonder if it is the mark of the person who built the trigger set up ?

Yes mine has the M on the trigger guard as well.
Here are some more photos, close up of the catch and some of the part you wanted.
