Well, not really a conundrum.:p

I recently bought a Cooey 39 for my sons upcoming 5th birthday. Before refinishing the wood I thought I better test fire it a few times for fun and just to see if it functioned correctly.

It turns out it won't extract long rifle spent cases. I think I've narrowed it down to either a worn extractor or a little mark inside the chamber I can't scrub out. I have heard of rimfires that only extract shorts because shorts were shot in them exclusively. The chamber has been worn past the length of the short case, so now when a long is fired, it expands into the worn spot and needs more force to extract than the extractor can handle. I've been using a fingernail.

While the obvious solution would be to exclusively fire shorts, I haven't fired shorts through it yet so I can't verify that. Is there a fix I can do myself to rectify this?

Get a bore light and have a look at the chamber. Then give it a really good bath before you do anything drastic. If it'll extract shorts, the extractor is likely ok though.

we use cooey rifles for our youth program at our club, and have used the same guns for decades, with mega thousands of rounds
ALWAYS is a gummed up chamber and they will have extraction issues
Only replaced 1, and it was because the bolt was removed and dropped on the cement floor of the range

My feeling is if you can pull them out with your finger nail but the extractor slips off the cases, I believe you have a problem with your extractor. But it is a guess without seeing the gun. You could try another bolt to see if it extracts .22 long rifle cartridges. But it is probably easier to buy a couple of extractors and replace yours. Try the EE here for some extractors or WESTERN GUN PARTS. The reason I suggest a couple of extractors is because it is easy to put in but also easy to break when you put them in. There is a trick to put them in ,ask when you have some. You could also try to file the angle of the extractor so it bites the case a little more .
