I just bought this in the EE because i have a thing for refinishing old guns, but am almost obsessive about the history of the type of gun im working on... anyway it was listed as a winchester ranger but looks a lot like a cooey 75 and i cant seem to find any information about winchester rangers that look anything like this.

Also the bolt handle and front sight look like some cooey 75's i've seen, but don't look like those of any winchester ranger i can find.

Would someone care to shed some light on this gun for me? And forgive me, Im very new to cooey's...winchesters... whatever it is, but is this the type of bolt you need to pull back on to #### or does it #### on closing/opening the bolt? Also how do these guns shoot? Is there anything typical with these guns i should look for when it arrives that might need attention?

Appears identical to my "Whale bellied" Cooey 75.

Both my Cooey 75's are "hyper accurate"...quite possibly the most accurate rifles in my safe!

They are manually cocked and, it's a separate step from cycling....You've posted this one in the makeover thread too...I'll echo your sentiment on it's wood being beautiful!

I agree, that is a Cooey!

And that one does look to have some very pretty wood under all those years of history.

I own several Cooey's, and they all shoot very well. Like any .22 though, you'll want to try the alrgest variety of ammo you can ... each gun has it's own prefence. One of my old ones (iirc, a Model 60) absolutely loved the Remington Yellow Jackets ... another had a thirst for Winchester Super X.

Mikeystew---The Ranger is a .22 single shot made for the Eatons Dept. Store chain back when Eaton's and Sears sold guns. Sears was the "Sure Shot" model. Your Ranger is the same as the Cooey model 75 except many Rangers had a 24" barrel as opposed to the Cooey model 75's 27" barrel. There was also the Cooey model 78 which was the same as the Cooey 75 except the 78 had a rear peep sight and front target sight. Your Ranger is a dependable, quite accurate rifle worthy of the Cooey name!
You have to pull back on the bolt knob each time to fire it. It is not automatic. It was a safety feature that Cooey came out with.

I had one of these 'whale belly' single shot Cooeys once. It was set up as a target rifle with hooded front and a rear peep reciever sight, and that you had to manually #### it.
In good light it was easy to pop gophers at 60 yards with this thing.
In a stupid moment I sold it.

x2 :)

Thanks guys, I think it looks like a cooey also and im not sure why the guy had it listed as a winchester...? we will see.

It is a Cooey. Ranger was the "store brand name" for Eatons. Winchester took over the Cooey plant in 1961 and continued to produce the model 75 for awhile. When they took over they stamped the guns Winchester/Cooey so that is probably why the seller listed it as a Winchester. Eventually the model 75 became the model 750.

Makes perfect sense now. Thanks.

\same gun also as the model 82 that were used as practice guns for the military in WWII. Different sights maybe but same basic gun....and as stated they are underrated as target arms.
