My father in law gave me his Cooey Model 39 to clean up for him. The rifle arrived at my house with sickly looking flaking varnish on the wood and a lovely lightly rusted barrel. After some 26 hours of elbow grease this is what I found under the crappy varnish:
The wood grain is very beautiful, not sure why it was hidden under the varnish. I used CLP and steel wool to clean the rust off the barrel, bringing out the original blueing. The stock had the varnish sanded off and 8 hand rubbed coats of Tru-Oil applied. The varnish was also removed from the white butt spacer and the black buttplate. Am very happy with the way it turned out! Looks much much better in person than in the pictures. It now looks worthy to be handed down to my brother in law.
