Hey all, my cooey model 60 is in great shape cosmetically and when it fires it shoots great however I can not seem to solve a frequent misfiring problem. Time to time the gun will shoot the full 11 round mag without issue. However usually 2 or 3 of the 11 misfire and sometimes up to half. Most fire on a second re-#### of the hammer. Ive taken a toothbrush to the chamber bolt face and firing pin and it all appears to be shiny and in good shape. The bolt has been throughly cleaned and the firing pin looks normal and moves freely (however the flat and round shape of it leads me to believe it may not be of the best design). The empty casings I believe have too shallow of a dent in the primer, even the ones the fire. The bolt can not be taken apart on this or else I would try replacing the hammer spring, should I consider re-shaping the round and flat firing pin to get a more focused strike? Do I need to replace the whole bolt? Sorry for the long post, any suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers
Andrew

Most likely the firing pin face is your issue. Bolt can be taken apart and firing pin replaced or refaced.
Search the forums, many posts on bolt takedown.

Yes the bolt can be taken apart there is a pin that must be driven out it is hard to find as the bolt is worn some and then it screws apart with some fooling around to hold the inner bolt rod and that is the hard part of the take down. Google it for a precise strip down.

Thanks guys, when the bolt is closed there is no play I've heard that can be an issue. I may try to take the bolt apart, where may I find a new firing pin or spring for such an old rifle? Is there anything I can do to reshape the firing pin face?

Perhaps look at this angle. I had a model 600 that misfired regularly and I too had cleaned the b'Jebus out of everything. In the end I found slight burs on the inside edge of the slot where the bolt travels. The previoius owner had either pried at it or pinched it tight in a vise and jimmied it, but after a bit of filing to make sure that channel was free, it has been fine ever since.

If it's your firing pin causing the issue (being cleaned many times doesn't mean there's not gunk in the bolt, or your spring is weakened/broken) you can try peening it a touch. Also, as reliable as a happy 60/600 can be, it doesn't take too much to cause some issues. I have seen all manner of migraine come from the nut on the takedown stud not being quite right.

Something else to consider is looking closely where the f/p strikes...a few too many dry fires can cause a depression. Have you looked closely at the brass of your fired/unfired rounds?
