cooey model 60 stock refinish problem

Have you tried using a pre stain wood sealer. It's supposed to make wood take the stain more evenly. Should be available at Home Depot etc. Just a thought.

It's a birch stock, and birch doesn't take stain evenly. Our dyed M-64 stock came out looking like surgi finish (burned bands) used on maple rifle stocks . While I never have never stained or dyed birch furniture, the common way to get an even finish is a wash of shellac.

You can also give it a good rub down with tea as strong as you can make it, then box it up tight with a bowl of ammonia for a couple weeks. The Tannic Acid interacts with the ammonia and gives a nice coloration to the wood. a real "old fashioned" way of doing it.....
