Cooey Model 71

Just bought one of these from a shooting friend (thanks Mike!) and until I learned of this rifle I never knew H.W. Cooey made anything but .22's and single shot,shotguns. Took it to the range and found the old girl shoots pretty darn good, but feeding is a bit unreliable sometimes. Its in .270 Winchester and is basically the same as a Win model 70,or 70A. Theres not much imfo on the net about Cooey either,but it says on the barrel "Winchester Western" and "Made in Cobourg Ont" so Im guessing it was built before 1971?
Just wondering if there are many of these around,and if anyone here knows how to date them with a serial number. They came in .308,30-06,and I believe .303 also.
 
The Cooey 71 is basically the same as a Winchester Model 70 Ranger. It was made at a lower cost, and has a birch stock with a blind magazine. The action is push-feed, compared to the more expensive controlled round feed found on pre-64 model 70s. (I can't recall if the 71 has the 3-position wing safety, or a two position, like on a Win 670.)
I have a Ranger in 30.06.

The ones with the Winchester-Cooey roll mark were made post-61, but there is little other dating info on the Cooeys.

Enjoy it is a great shooter, like most Cooeys.
 
The 71 and 710 Cooeys rifles were a bit of a "mix" of components. The bolt is pure model 70 Winchester, but without the 3-position safety.

The actual action is not M70. It resembles a model 700 Remington, with a round, pipe like receiver, and a recoil lug sandwiched between the barrel and receiver.

Trigger is modelled after the M70, and these have a 2-position safety on the RHS.

These rifles were generally quite accurate, and were quite economical to buy new. Good value for the dollar. [I bought a brand-new 71 in 225 Winchester for $99.95]

Why do you believe that? It seems unlikely.
 
The Cooey M71/710 came in 5 chamberings:

225 Winchester, 243 Winchester, 270 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield and 308 Winchester. No 303 British.

Don't know why I thought it came in 303. Anyways,thanks for the comments. I found on Bargain Hunter a guy that had some .270 ammo for sale. Met him in a parking lot on the way home from work,handed him 40 dollars and he handed me a bag. When I got home I found 61 rounds of both factory and handloads,plus dozens of empty brass. Going to the range with H.W again soon.

Just a head's up -- I would not be shooting anyone else's handloaded ammo in my rifle. There is no way to know what the load is, and whether it is safe in YOUR rifle or not.

Factory stuff is fine, of course. Regards, Dave.
 
I had a 71 in .308 that was amazing. Dean and I each took two shots with it and the group was within 1". It went to a happy man somewhere out west. I have a 71 in 30-06 that I am going to try out. Very plain rifles, but a good piece of Canadiana. :)

Thanks,but he told me its loaded to factory specs,so Ill chance it. If my Cooey goes Ka-blooy Ill let you know.

I always advise new hunters, the rifle you get your first deer with should not be sold, it should be passed on to a new young hunter, ideally a blood relative.

This is my 1st. deer plopper and I still have 'er.

I had a Cooey M71 in the 80's re-barreled in .35-284 that put a few deer in the fridge as well. A decent rifle
that worked just fine.:)
