Hi all, well seeing as how my semi auto .22 went down the tubes {check furthur down the thread under firing pin and ejector problems}. I've decided im gonna stop wasting my money on that gun and move my attention too my cooey model 750. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has had some experience with these rifles? Would this be a good platform to start a precision .22 from? Dont get me wrong im not trying to make some crazy accurate rifle i just want a nice good shooting gun with a better stock {which i will make} and maybe a barrel and peep sights etc. This is all part of me building up my gun collection, the next additions will be this gun, a .338 rig and a norinco 1911.

Thanks Steve

Don't usually talk about precision rifles and Cooeys at the same time. It would be different.

I'm going to experiment with building a .22 up for fun - hopefully a precision rifle. Something to do for the winter.
I've ordered this rifle:

I've already got a couple of these guns and they are very accurate - for $125 I can't go wrong. Very heavy barrel and it's a Schultz and Larsen.

Then I'm going to make a target stock following Tiriaq's plan.

And then I'll get the action either grooved or drilled and tapped for scope bases.

Should be fun and could be a real shooter, probably for under $200. If these guns can shoot groups like I posted with aperture sights, imagine with a good, high powered scope.

well im using "precision" as a loose term, i just want an accurate .22 i dont plan on going to compitions or anything i just wanna punch paper with half decent groups lol. Seeing as how i have an old cooey model 750 i was just wondering if its possible? Slash5 it looks like youll have a nice gun there when your done! Good Luck and any extra help would be greatly apreeciated!

Thanks Steve

A Cooey single shot may shoot quite well. The inletting for a Cooey is about as basic as you can get. Good first project. Easy enough to add peep sights.

Thanks tiraq, Id leave it mainly how it is but theres a couple gashes in the stock and the sights are bent so i may as well have some fun eh? Do you know of anyone that would sell barrels for it?

Thanks Steve

A Cooey has a very small diameter barrel shank. Most any other .22 barrel could be fitted, if you wanted to rebarrel it as an exercise. If you look at the breech face of your existing barrel, you will notice an extractor clearance cut which runs part way aroud the breech face. Duplication of this cut will be the hardest part of the machining required to install a barrel. Realistically, a Cooey single shot is a low value rifle. Spending a lot of money on the project wouldn't make sense.
As Slash5 has mentionned, 10/22 barrels can often be purchased for very reasonable prices. Lots of meat to remachine for a Cooey.

Thanks for the help, yea tiriaq your right but i never did plan on spending a lot of money on it, maybe a couple hundred or a bit more? Like i said just a little job to make something fun to shoot. Thanks A lot!

To do this on the cheap, you could knock the factory front sight off and throw a Lyman 17A on. Thats around $40 and you can always reuse it on another rifle.
Find one of the Cooey 82 rear peeps cheap, file a flat on the receiver and mount it, bit of cold blue.
Recrown the barrel.
Bed the receiver and the barrel out past the mounting bolt. Free float the rest of the barrel and experiment with a pressure pad at the tip of the forearm.
It might make a real shooter out of it. If nothing else, you will have learned a lot.
You might also keep an eye out for a junker with front and rear apertures. You could pickup sights and a barrel to play with for less than the sights are worth. And maybe recover some of your costs by selling the stock and bolt from the junker.

I actually really like your idea Slash5 and really thats all i want something to shoot and have fun with, experiment a bit and not have to break the bank. Thanks Alot!
