I've got a Cooey Model 84 that's serialed in the 66,200 range. I understand that they didn't keep good records of what serial numbers were produced from year to year, but can it be narrowed down to say, a 5 year window?

Don't really know other than the model 84 was introduced in 1948. Don't know how many were produced per year, especially the first few years.

I read that the Cooey Model 84 is a 1901 design?

Sure about that? 1964 Cooey was bought out by ?winchester? I think and was then reproduced under the Model 840 designation...at least thats my recollection...

"The Cooey model 84/840 [shotguns] that were manufactured before 1961 are stamped "H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Company" on the right side of the action and the guns made after the purchase from Winchester of Cooey are stamped "Winchester-Western (Canada) Limited." on the right side of the receiver. Written records of serial numbers are not generally available. Some have suggested that Cooey did not use serial numbers, but many pre-1961 model 84s are stamped with serial numbers on the receiver, barrel (under the fore stock) and under the butt plate/shoulder stock. Dating the serial numbers remains a challenge for Cooey gun collectors." -Wikipedia

So according to this, its pre-1961, not much different from what I figured already. There's a couple different conflicting statements in the Wiki article that says 1961 or 1967 for the Winchester takeover

The model 84 was still produced for a few years after the Winchester take over in 1961. Just guessing, I would say a 66,000 serial number range would be mid 50's. Again, that's just a hunch.

The Winchester/Cooey Model 840 went into production in 1968.The Cooey Model 84 went into production in 1948 and was produced until 1961 when Winchester purchased Cooey. From 1961 until 1967 it was produced as the Winchester Cooey Model 84.

It is pre 61 what year god knows

I have a H.W. Cooey Machine and Arms Company Ltd. marked Model 84 that I was purchased new in 1963, #58859. It is my own personal gun.

It was 1967 that Model was changed to 840.

From what I have seen, there were still model 84's after the 61 takeover that were stamped with the old H. W. Cooey Machine brand. It is most likely there was old stock that Winchester was using up after the takeover. These guns still had walnut stocks. I also have seen the model 84 with the H.W. Cooey stamping on one side of the receiver and the Wincester stamping on the other side which I would assume was after old stock was used up. The 840 came out around the end of 1967 and was a cheaper gun material wise.
