i have a cooey model 84 12 gauge, has a 40 some odd inch barrel, i was told that i couldnt shoot buckshot through it, reason for that is the barrel will split at the end because of the full choke, has this ever happen to anyone, im asking because, im planning on using it in a shotgun only season and damm does it ever shoot nice?
thanks;
Phil

The Cooey barrel will not split because you use buck shot. Even a foster style slug will not split that barrel. Cooeys and other low priced singles have swaged chokes. Meaning the outer diameter of the barrel was swaged to produce a degree of choking. I have owned several and despite what the choke markings say most Cooeys are modified chokes. Of course arguments of inner diameter vs industry choke standards will present themselves your gun is safe with modern buck loads as long as it in good condition. Have fun with it.

cheers Darryl

I can't see a problem with buckshot, the soft lead buckshot will compress & conform to the choke like a rifled (Foster) slug would. The only real issue would be that the pellets would deform and not fly as true( if thats possible.).

there's no problem with slugs or buckshot, as far as splitting your barrel. as stated above, more open chokes , pattern better with large shot sizes, even with BB or # 2 lead. cooey 840's do sometimes show rates of constriction that are improved modified rather than full choke as is stamped on the barrel
