Hi all,

I have an old (?) ranger with a tube magazine and was wondering what the model number is? And yes it is in rough shape the gentleman who owned had it poorly stored.

Thanks for help.

The FRT lists a Ranger Make Ranger Model Cooey Manufactor that is the way they list it.I need the info off the rifle Cooey made a lot of models

Ranger was one of the names under which Cooeys were sold. Your rifle is the same as a Cooey Repeater, AKA Model 60.

Here is the info

As far as I know, "Ranger" was a "house brand name" used by Eaton's for all of the Cooey-made .22's and shotguns they sold ... (with "Eatonia" being an much earlier such house name ...)

Here are pics of a bolt-action .22 and a 12 ga. shotgun, both bearing the "Ranger" name, originally purchased from Eaton's ...

A pair of inexpensive single-shot Cooey-made firearms sold by the T. Eaton Company
- how Canadian can you get, eh?

Kind of on the same subject, I picked up a .22 from a buddy that looks just like the single shot that Grant displayed. The only markings on it are SURESHOT .22 S-L-LR. I already assumed it was an old Cooey. Could anyone help me with the origin of this?

old Cooeys

As allready stated the repeater is in fact a sub model of the model 60 that was labeled for the T. Eaton Co. Closer look at the rifle reveals the following: The model 60 was basically made from 1939 to 1961 when Cooey was sold to Winchester. Looking you can see in the pic the square bottom pistol grip, rear sight fastened to the barrel by a screw and side mount drilled and tapped for scope mount. I would say by this that it is a later model and made sometime in the late 50's.

The Sureshot was made by Cooey for the Simpson which later became Sears--------Cowboy

Mac:

Cowboy has already given you the answer. To flesh it out, though admittedly not by much, here is the entire relevant entry in John A. Belton's "Cooey Fireams, Made in Canada, 1919-1979" (a 32-page booklet published by Museum Restoration Service, which is the only publication I am aware of covering Cooey firearms) -
SURE SHOT - A house brand .22 caliber rifle and shotgun line made by Cooey for The Robert Simpson Co. Ltd. of Toronto and Montreal as early as 1942. This department store was second only in size to the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. In later years the company merged with Sears-Roebuck of the United States to form Simpson's-Sears.
Cooey didn't really make all that many different models, but they were marketed by various retailers under several such "house names" .... other examples: "Sniper" (Marshall-Wells Hardware Company), "Mercury" (Woodward Stores), 'Hiawatha" (Macleod's Limited), and "Hawkeye" (Northern Hardware Co.)

Old RSM and Dizzy Dan: The first firearm that was exclusively mine was a Cooey .410 single-barrel shotgun (essentially the same configuration as the 12 ga. shown above) also purchased for me by my father.

Getting a Cooey must have been a very common part of growing up for many Canadians - at least those who are on the "downhill side" of 50 - right up there with having a CCM bicycle!

Cheers nessy.

This genteleman is Russ Wood, I bought some stuff for a model 75 off of him. He's good to deal with. Bolts he provided me with were in excellent shape. I had a handout with a list of parts for Cooey 22's he has parts for, anyways give him a call. Here's his address: Russ Wood, Box 368, Blind River, Ontario, P0R1B0
