As I posted in the "best irons" thread, I am looking for a new set of iron sights for my Cooey Model 78. The rear peep would be great, but I'm not holding my breath. What I want is a set of better sights to mount. Right now, I need to have the front sight hanging half off the side to get it to align a straight shot.

I have been looking at the Williams WG series sights but have run into an embarasing lack of knowledge which I will remedy when I get home. What I don't know is how the rear leaf sight is attached to the barrel. I assumed it was just held on with the single screw. I saw a photo on JoeSalter.com of a Model 78 for sale with only the rear peep sight and a blank in a dovetail where the leaf sight attaches. Do all Cooey's have the dovetail? It would make acquiring a new rear leaf so much easier as I have not found any with just a screw mount.

Thanks in advance

Scotty

Ok, I answered my own question but now have another. Does anyone know if the dovetail for the fore sight is a common size or if it varies by rifle brand.

Thanks

varies depending on the make.

some cooeys have rear sight mounted with a screw some just get punched into place. they are easy to work with.and easy to get.
firesight is nice to use. depending what you use the gun for..

Older Cooeys from around early thirties used a larger dove tail for a few years then they switched to 3/8 regular size.
