Hello CGNers;

Does anyone have any info on what thread size the sight beads on Cooey 84/840 shotguns use? My dad has a 12ga Cooey single-shot break-action and I'd like to pick up a couple TruGlo beads for him for Christmas -- his near-sight eyesight is starting to go and he's having trouble focusing on a plain metal bead. ;)

As far as I can tell, it should use 3/56 threads since the Cooey 84/840 was also sold as a Winchester, so I assume they'd use Winchester-standard threading, but if anyone here can confirm, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Cooey wouldn't have followed Winchester threading size as the 84 came out long before the Winchester takeover. Not saying the guns after Winchester took over aren't the same thread size but don't know if Winchester changed thread size or not after the takeover. All I know is I had an older 84 that needed a new front bead. I had 2 beads on hand but neither fit so a gunsmith I know put one in for me.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't know how old my dad's shotty is, and I'm not sure he does either. I know he's replaced a few beads in the past when they get knocked off due to tromping through dense bush after a partridge :p but he's always gotten it replaced at a gunsmith, and so doesn't know the threading either.

Google isn't overly helpful either. :(

get a set of magnetic/snap on tru-glo sights with interchangable lite pipes.they sit right on top of the barrel and have a notch to fit over the existing front sight/bead.

This is what I am using ... think I paid about $10 at canadian tire ... Works great! Excellent low light visibility.

Hmm -- the universal ones are an interesting idea. How well do they stand up to abuse -- e.g. taking it in and out of gun boots on an ATV, getting whacked by saplings in dense brush, getting tossed in & out of vehicles, etc? Going through 10 sets of sights in a hunting season would get expensive mighty fast. ;)

I have the cheapest one crappy tire sold at the time ... about 3 inches long blak plastic and it "snaps" onto the barrel. About a 2" long Red light bar on the top of it.

Over the last 10 years, It has been in and out of gun socks, dragged through swamps and in and out of canoes (even sunk it twice), bungy corded to the front racks of atv's (3 & 4 wheel) and driven through the bush, frozen and ice covered, and routinely carried on hands and knees through dense brush crawling for grouse and bunny. Never moved, never fell off, never broke. It has a small nothc in it that aligns it with the existing bead, and it stays exactly where it should be.

I bought it for the early morning duck hunts on the cloudy days, as the brass bead is tough to see in dim light against the bullrushes where we hunt. One day with it on and I've never taken it off, and will never hunt without one now. Only time it has been off is when I camo wrapped the shotgun - and it fit the barrel after being wrapped as well as it did before.

Never saw any difference in animals reactions either. It certainly didn't stop ducks & geese from flying in.

The only thing to check on the cheapest of the models is that the front mount (closest to the bead) for the light bar is "solid" ... I've seen one or two that had the light bar end visible from the business end of the gun, and that's a bad thing as the light would be a bright spot to any game you are pointing the gun at.

Great info, thanks! I'll definitely take a look at the universal options.
