Cooey to Savage

How did you seperate the barrel from the action?

I never could figure it out...

When you separate the barrel from the action, make it a straight pull back. Tap gently with a padded hammer if necessary. The logical way would be to twist the two pieces and pull them apart, but if you do , you will bend or break the ejector. If it is a wire ejector, you will definitely break it. I know, I did it.

Those are the exact mags I have.

Here the two different clip of Cooey, Lakefield and the new Savage.
They can be used on all the 64 series guns.
I find that the new one works better for all the guns.
retail price of the new one about $ 16.00 or up, wholesale about $ 11.00

Cooey, Lakefield, Savage .... 64, they're very fun gun to shoot with and
easy to work with, solid and hardly fail ....

Hey Sniper22,

Do you have any pics of the trigger assembly in parts?

I cleaned the Lakefield the other day (it was dirtier than the pics you showed) and will test it out this weekend to see if thats what was causing the FTL's. I was too chicken to pull the trigger assembly apart though as this is the first gun I have taken apart (thanks to your pictorial)

I just found another one from shooter's choice, this perticular one is a bit
better than the one from Ellwood ...

Hi Richard, here it is .....

Thanks Sniper22,

Well it wasn't the fact that the lakefield was dirty that was causing FTL's as we took it out today and still had FTL's, plus the cheap Winchester Xperts (now thats the biggest oxymoron if there ever was one cuz no Expert on the face of this earth would put one of those through their rifle) kept catching on the lip of the magazine and ripping lead off the bullets and or jamming in the mag (could be the larger diameter flat nose of these things). We were having a little better luck with the Winchester Dynapoints, but still not 100%. Maybe I have a finicky rifle that will only eat certain ammo, I just need to find out what that is. Or I have something seriously wrong somewhere in the rifle itself.

Federal 500 Box - FTL's - Not as bad as Xperts
Winchester Xperts - FTL's - Worst - Had one clip FTL on every round in the mag
Federal American Eagle - FTL's - Didn't use enough of these to make a valid assesment
Federal 50 Box - FTL's - Same as American Eagles
Winchester Dynapoints - FTL's - Bearable

Hi CyaN1de,

You're right the darn Xperts is just totally not good for it.
I found the Remington Yellow jacket works the best, especially with my new
thumbhole stock, I can do 10 shots at 35 yards in 1" grouping.
Another good one is the federal champion with the 510 load.

I also found that the solid metal ejector works much better than the
wire ejector.

Yeah, mine has the metal extractor and not the wire one, we seem to have very limited .22 rounds around here without going to something like Lapua or Eley (which I am not about to buy just to plink, maybe if I get into Silouette).

Thanks for all your info, I really appreciate it.

Richard

I found another one today at the ancaster gun's show ....
and got superd222 hook on it too ... LOL ....

Stock refinishing..

Hey Richard,

I have to refinish the stock on my first 64B.

Sniper22 told me to use Circa 1850 to remove the old finish - then, my glass-bedding wood-smith buddy told me he steams-out the dents.

I think I'll try this - any other suggestions?

Thanks - and good luck - watch out the Cooey bug doesn't bite you too!!!!

Hey Superd222, take a look at the pics below, circa 1850 is exactly what I used. It's great stuff, and won't hurt the wood at all. I brushed a bunch on the stock on some poly then wrapped it up in the poly for about 15 mins. Takes the finish right off, I used a small brass brush to get the finish out of the "Checkering" (if that's what you want to call it LOL)

I am a professional painter and have Stripped, Stained and Lacquered/Urethaned many pieces of furniture as well.

I wish I would have taken before pics :bangHead:

This is just after I stripped it

This is after sanding Man was this one dirty

This is after staining, I mixed my own color and then used a fine artist brush to put a dark mahogany stain in the "Checkering"

This is after 1 coat of Minwax Semi Gloss Urethane, I got too excited to get the Urethane on that I didn't wait until the stain on the "Checkering" was dry so some of it came off with the Finish as you can see in the front checkering. (I suggest you wait overnight to start putting on any finish if you stain it)

I am going to sand it and put another coat on tomorrow then 1 more sand and a hand rubbed coat of the same Minwax Urethane.
