Hey all .

Picked up a Cooey 64a with two mags and a period scope on it . Really nice gun , bluing pristine . The wood was a bit rough so I've stripped and sanded it and am going to tung it here . Was just wondering what kind of wood this is . Checked search function and google but not finding anything .
It's quite light , much lighter than my model 60 .
Sorry but I cannot get pics from my photobucket to here for some reason .
Just wondering what this model came with originally if any of you know as I think this is the original stock .
Thanks all .
D

Whatever it is , it's light and really hard . Very pretty . Thanks for the responses . Would an original ad for Cooey maybe say ? I know nothing about wood , exempt I love it ( haha , I know how that sounds gents ) .

I think all the vintage ads says is "hardwood" stock. It's likely possible that more than one type of hardwood was used depending on the year, availability and deal made regarding cost.

You're probably right . I will have to wait until I meet a person who knows wood and show them to find out what wood it is .
Thanks for the response .

My Cooey's and Lakefields were all birch. Its a light coloured wood with mild wood grain...almost ressembling maple. Beech wood does have a similar colour, but the wood grain on beach is tighter and has a wavey appearance. If you look closely at beech, it has tiny dark spots between the grain that is very noticeable. You almost cant confuse the two when looking closely.

have a look at this site....its a good reference. http://european-beech.pollmeier.com...ity_beech_comparison.php?compare=yellow_birch

Thank you so much .
I'm sure , based on this that it is birch . I've oiled it now and love the light wood , it's really gorgeous .
Thanks for the info 1963Beretta !

Some of them came with pretty nice wood.

I'd love to show " my wood "lol , but I'm photobucket challenged right now .
Mine looks a lot like lookys there . That one of yours tjsudbury is REALLY stunning .
Damn , I really love these old Cooeys . My model 60 is much older then this one , from before Winchester took over . Can't wait to shoot the new 64 . As a lefty it's going to be great to shoot the semi .

Hey tj , is that trigger guard plastic ? Mines metal , just wondering when they changed ( if yours is indeed plastic ) .

Yes, plastic trigger guard. I don't know when they changed. Also, safety is different from Looky's. His has a safety lever, on mine, you push in/pull out the charging knob

I believe the lever saftey switch was added after Cooey became Lakefield. All Cooey's i've owned and seen have the safety on the operating bolt, and all lakefields I've owned and seen have the lever saftey switch.
